In Cairo’s Tahrir Square is the Egyptian Museum. Perhaps its most famous exhibit is Tutankhamen, the boy King. He came to power when he was 19 years old and ruled for 9 years. In truth, Lamia told us, he was not an important Pharaoh in life, but important because his tomb was found nearly untouched. Also, King Tut was discovered at the time Egypt achieved independence. Susanna remembers seeing the King Tut exhibit at Toronto's Royal Ontario Museum as a kid, and being very impressed.

We learned that the beard of a statue tells us about when it was crafted. If it's a curly beard on the Pharaoh, the sculpture was made after death. A straight beard indicates the statue was produced while the Pharaoh lived.

Also we learned that mummies are about half the size of the body was in life. Mathai estimated the crocodile mummy was 9 meters long - it must have been huge while alive!

Animals were typically mummified for three main purposes: to allow beloved pets to go on to the afterlife, to provide food in the afterlife, and to act as offerings to a specific god.
