  • Day 1

    May 31, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

We left Austin bright & early and made the trek out to Carlsbad Caverns. This was Chris's first time. The plan was to hike through the caverns, head to the state park to set up camp, & then back up to the Caverns to watch the bats. Unfortunately, we got stuck in traffic & by the time we made it to the campsite there wouldn't have been time to get back for the bats. Instead, we set up camp, played some dominoes, & enjoyed the evening by the lake. Chef Chris made us some yummy chicken sausages, & we were visited by some nice bunnies and a small slithery fellow by our picnic table.Read more

  • Good Morning!

    June 1, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

We awoke this morning to a wonderfully loud bird perched above our tent at 5 am. After the 104° afternoon we had, the weather this morning feels amazing! We had a great breakfast of leftover chicken sausage, boiled eggs, gouda, blueberries, & coffee. I also discovered a very disturbing looking giant desert spider! All packed up now & ready for day 2!Read more

  • Pie Town!!

    June 1, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

A yummy little dot on the map! Keri heard about Pie Town on Good Morning America! We had slices of Very Berry & Apple a la mode. So good! We got lucky too- right after we sat down with our pies a huge group of bikers pulled up & filled the place! Now back on the road with happy bellies. 🥧🙂Read more

  • Homolovi State Park

    June 1, 2018 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 24 °C

We arrived at Homolovi State Park and set up camp for the night. We made way to much chilli mac & played some dominoes in the tent for tonight in an attempt to stay away from the bugs.

  • Homolovi II

    June 2, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

We inexplicably both woke up before 5 am this morning. After huddling in the warmth of our sleeping bags for a half hour longer (it was 51° this morning) we got up, had breakfast, & packed up camp. Then we stopped by the visitor's center to see what there was to explore before leaving Homolovi. We had a great chat with the ranger, who it turns out went to UT 🤘. He recommended some places to check out both in the park and in town before we moved on. We saw some cool Hopi ruins and an old pioneer cemetery.Read more

  • La Posada Hotel

    June 2, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 34 °C

On the Homolovi ranger's suggestion we stopped by the La Posada Hotel for brunch & a tour. I had pancakes with prickly pear syrup, bacon, eggs, & poblano potatoes. Yum!! Then we went on a tour with a Winslow Harvey Girl guide. She was very knowledgeable! I highly recommend this stop if you're ever in the area!Read more

  • Lake Powell

    June 2, 2018 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 28 °C

We arrived in Lake Powell this afternoon and set up camp at the Wahweap/Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. We hiked down to the lake and hung out on the beach until the sun started to go down. Then we hit the showers before making some dinner & ending the night with a game of dominoes & some pineapple cider. Tomorrow we're headed to Horseshoe Bend & Lower Antelope! 😁😁Read more

  • Horseshoe Bend

    June 3, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

This morning we headed up to horseshoe bend. It was beautiful of course, but already a little busy. We're going to try to come back at sunrise tomorrow and explore a little more.

  • Lower Antelope Canyon

    June 3, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 33 °C

After Horseshoe, we headed over to the Navajo Nation for a tour of Lower Antelope. It was beautiful down there! Our tour guide, Isaac did a great job of pointing out shapes in the rocks and showing us how to get pictures at just the right angles. See if you can tell which pic he calls the "rocky mountain sunset" & which is the "seahorse".Read more

  • Hanging Garden Trail

    June 3, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 34 °C

After our Lower Antelope tour, we had a quick lunch & then hiked the hanging garden trail. There were beautiful sweeping views from the end of the trail, which my pictures sadly don't do justice.

  • Lees Ferry

    June 4, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

We stayed in Lees Ferry National Recreation Area last night. We got a great spot right on the edge of the plateau overlooking the Colorado river. We set up out tent & then went down to explore the river a little before going back to cook dinner & crash for the night. Keri made us a delicious dinner of Bombay potatoes, rice, green beans, & sausage. We enjoyed the view & some blood orange cider with our meal. We slept with all the windows open & the camp fan on because it was so hot last night! Hopefully we'll be up at a higher elevation & tomorrow night will be a little cooler! Now we're off for our mule ride through the Grand Canyon 😁.Read more

  • Mule ride

    June 4, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

We went on a mule ride through the North Rim of the Grand Canyon this morning. I rode Oprah & Keri rode Vivian. Some of the people who had signed up for the ride didn't show up, so there just ended up being 4 of us plus our guide. The ride was great & the views were amazing!Read more

  • Cape Royal Rd

    June 4, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

We took a scenic drive down Cape Royal Rd before heading to De Motte to meet Chris & set up camp. We stopped to check out the views at Vista Encantada, Roosevelt Point, Walhalla Overlook, Angels Window, and Cape Royal Point.Read more

  • Cliff Springs Trail

    June 4, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

After we met Chris & set up camp, we headed back out to explore the Cliff Springs Trail. Along the path we saw an ancient Pueblo granary. The trail was a little precarious in some spots, but very pretty. The spring itself was nothing great- there was just a tiny trickle of water along the wall that formed some muddy pools. But I loved all the little plants growing upside down from the rock overhangs!Read more

  • Zion & the Watchman Trail

    June 5, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

Today we arrived at Zion. We took the scenic shuttle tour through the park before meeting up with Chris back at camp. The guidebook said the best sunset view in Zion was from the Watchman Trail, so we set out to do that this evening. I didn't get any good sunset shots, but I did get nice nighttime one. After the hike we stopped for some burgers & beers at the Zion Brewery.Read more

  • Emerald Pool Trail

    June 6, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Chris & Keri wanted to be daredevils today & hike Angel's Landing, so I ventured off on my own & explored the Emerald Pools & the Grotto. The lower & middle pools were fairly easy hikes & very pretty, and there was a refreshing waterfall at the lower pool. The upper pool trail was definitely more challenging. It was more climbing from boulder to boulder in the sand & hot sun than hiking, but it was a beautiful shaded oasis at the top!Read more

  • Grotto Trail

    June 6, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

After hanging out at the Upper Emerald Pool for a bit, I hiked the Grotto Trail back down. This trail had beautiful views of the canyon & river below.

  • The Narrows

    June 6, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

After our separate morning hikes & a quick lunch, Chris, Keri & I met up again to hike The Narrows. The Narrows is described in our guide book as the "quintessential Zion experience". The trail is actually in a narrow part of the Virgin River in the canyon. It can be done as a 2 day hike & the water is up to 5 feet in some spots when you get far along the way. We obviously didn't do the 2 day hike. The deepest we got in was up to the bottom of my shorts. This was by far my favorite hike so far! The water was cool & the canyon was beautiful! We even stopped for a while to enjoy a waterfall along the way.Read more
