    Someone felt a tad inadequate...

    July 6 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

I sat in front of the giant penis for 10 minutes, wondering what the fuck do I do, where the fuck do I go? I asked myself, how did I get here? Actually, no I didn't really ask myself that. Stop Making Sense popped into my head and I thought it flowed nicely.

But my inertia below the ridiculously large phallic building known as the Mirador Torre Glòries had to be dealt with, hopefully with kindness. I tend to be quite harsh with myself, much harsher than I am with others. For those close to me, who have experienced some of my less kind, less charitable moments, you can perhaps imagine then, the chaos up there.

So my most charitable rendering of this situation is, whatever...it happens. Too much travelling recently, too much moving around, jetlag, no coffee for 2 days, and adjusting to having no plan at all in Barcelona except to hang out with my old friend from México, Carlos and his partner Barbara. Having no plan for a visit to one of the greatest big cities might seem a bit crazy but this is my fourth time here so I thought I'd just go with the flow. Hang out with my friends, see what they were doing and fill in the blanks where necessary. Carlos told me about a big new park that was pretty cool, and it was right beside the Mirador Torre Glòries and El Museo del Diseño de Barcelona (DHUB) so that's where I went. The park was quite nice - lots of places to sit or lie down, but it could use more grassy areas. It did have an amazing metro stop too (see picture with cacti)

After walking around the park, I kind of wanted to go to the Mirador (lookout) at the top of the Torre Glòries but wasn't totally committed to it and that's how I found myself sitting below the giant penis partially frozen with indecision. Still having the soul of a CAB (Cheap Ass Backpacker) the entry price of 22 euros finally tipped the scale to no. I wandered next door to DHUB, had an espresso in the cafe inside (would have preferred an americano but totally forgot that here, un solo means an espresso...d'oh!) and waited for my prefrontal cortex to do its thing. I'm not sure it was fully engaged, but enough for me to go get a ticket and start my DHUB experience. I'm so glad I did go because it was a surprisingly good time. And somehow, instead of the 6 euros the sign noted, it was free. Whoop Whoop! I'm back in the park now, chilling in one of the lounge chairs planning/ not planning my next move😁

  • What a view!

    July 7 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

There's nothing like a good hike to help set the mind right.

    From https://www.earthtrekkers.com/day-trip-montserr…

"Montserrat is a rocky mountain range in Catalonia, Spain. 'Montserrat' translates to 'saw mountain' in Catalan, owing to this mountain range’s jagged, sawtooth appearance.
Sitting atop the mountain range is Santa Maria de Montserrat, a Benedictine monastery. Located inside of the monastery is a statue of the of the Virgin of Montserrat, one of the few black madonnas of Europe."

I can attest to the beauty of the area and its stunning views, but I didn't go into any church or monastery, so no comment on that or pictures. I would have gone in to see the famous boys' choir, but alas, they are on summer vacation. Heathens obviously 🙄

  • Peniche, Diving and ...

    Jul 9–13 in Portugal ⋅ 🌬 20 °C

This was written a couple of weeks ago when I was in Peniche. I meant to write more often but from Barcelona to Peniche to Porto, and finally Idanha a Nova where the Boom Psytrance Festival was, it's been a really fun but busy few weeks. I may or may not write more, sorry but I kept putting it off, doing... you know, travel stuff; sightseeing, hiking, diving, hanging out with friends, Boom Psytrance festival, Lisbon, etc.

First impression of Peniche is wow. Wow, it's pretty. Wow, it's quiet, compared to Barcelona anyway. Wow, it's cheap. I'm here to dive, hike, check out the beach, and chill. Cz shit's going to get  whole lot busier, a whole crazier once I leave here. It's three days in Porto next, then a week at the Boom Psytrance festival and finally, four days in Lisbon. So I'm going to try and soak up as much chill as possible here...ahhh

Great day scuba diving yesterday although it wasn't without some drama. It's been a few years since I'd gone diving and combined with my minor asthma issue which mostly manifests itself in shortness of breath and the feeling of needing to take a deep breath - a decidedly not minor issue underwater - I was, admittedly, a little anxious. Oh, and that it was my first time shoving in the colder waters of the Atlantic added a bit the slight unease I felt. But I reminded myself that even though it's been a while since I've donned the scuba gear and descended 30 metres below the surface, where sweet, sweet air is so freely available, I have maybe 80 to 100 dives under my (weight 🙄😆) belt so it'll all come back to me. And if I should find myself short of breath, to just use my years of meditation practice and stay calm, breath slowly and concentrate on my breath. With my little internal pep talk, and two inhalations of Symbicort, I got into a nice, calm headspace ready for the dive.

Well, I might have been ready but one of the five other divers on the boat (plus 2 dive masters) was not quite. We had on a full 7mm wetsuit with a hood that zipped up to the chin. They were pretty snug and she felt a little too snug perhaps, that combined with the slight shock of the cold water when we jumped in made her a little panicky and she eventually chose to abandon the dive and get back on the boat. The water was colder than on any dive I've experienced but it wasn't crazy cold. According to the captain and owner of the dive shop, Jorge, it was only 18 degrees Celsius. But it definitely got colder as you went deeper and after 20 or 25 minutes I was starting to shiver a bit. No one complained when we hauled ourselves back into the boat about 30 minutes into the dive.

    Ciao for now!

  • Porto, Boom & Lisboa

    Jul 14–16 in Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

Porto was fantastic, highly recommended if you haven't been yet. Honestly, I've liked every place in Portugal I've been to. Every place Gi and I travelled to three years ago, and each place on this trip I've enjoyed. The crowds at some parts of Porto were intense, but Portugal is a popular destination, and it's the middle of summer, so it's to be expected. If it wasn't for the Boom festival, I'd visit earlier or later in the year, but it was manageable, and I thoroughly enjoyed myself.

I stayed in a nice apartment in Porto that, unfortunately, was owned and/or run by a company that has over a hundred such places in and around Porto. I stayed with my buddies Cristian, Keith and his partner, Renée. I struck out on my own mostly but we would meet here there each day for a park hangout or drinks somewhere. I searched out some of the buildings that had the famous blue tiles (azulejos??), wandered the narrow, winding roads in the older part of town, walked along the pretty (but very busy) waterfront, caught an intimate live Fado show that also included videos mixed into the show explaining the history of the music and the guitars. We found a cool bar where you could smoke pot or hash at the back terrace. I struck up a conversation with a dude who was smoking, wondering if we could buy some. He didn't know but kindly offered us some of his and even gifted me a bit when he left... so nice!

I enjoyed the cool vibe at a park on the other side of the river where many locals and tourists go to wind down, have a drink or smoke, and enjoy one of the best sunset views in Porto.

After three fun days in Porto, it was time to head to the airport, not to fly back but to take the Boom bus to Boom. There are three locations you can catch the Boom bus from; Lisbon, Porto, and Madrid. While Lisbon is the most popular location, Porto is also pretty busy and it took three hours to finally get on a bus. But everyone was pretty chilled because of course, we're going to Boom! The bus ride, as you might imagine, was a fun and raucous affair. Made all the more so by my outgoing and super sociable companions, especially Cristian. It's nice sometimes to travel with people like that since at heart I'm a bit shy and introverted.

At Boom, we finally met up with our whole extended crew, many who were friends of my friends whom I had never met before. Let the fun begin!

Psytrance first and foremost was what we were there for, and man, did we dance our asses off! There are some shenanigans of course to go along with the dancing as it's an extremely progressive and permissive vibe that permeates the festival. It is, after all, psychedelic trance music with its roots in the psychedelic movement of Goa and farther back, 60's counterculture.

But we also went to many talks, chilled out at other stages that have world beat or chilled music. There's amazing art everywhere and a jaw dropping laser onto smoke/mist show that plays every night. I think I might still be there staring at it had I not been pulled away. 😆.

There's a lake, too, and while not the greatest beach, it's just amazing to have a lake and beach to chill out and cool off at.

Everybody you meet and interact with are so happy, so nice. Our crew were amazing - from friends I know like Beth, Rowen, Flora & Kevin, Cristian, Keith, Jules, Eric & Colleen and Dave, to the new friends, George & Tara (whom Gi and I shared a tipi tent with along with Cristian), Krista, Brett & Stephanie.

After Boom, Gi and I went to Lisbon to meet her parents and hang out for a few days. Unfortunately I was a bit sick and missed a couple of days of going out, but I did go to the beach with everyone, and a birthday dinner with Fado performance on the last night.

I miss everyone, but I'm not dwelling on it, I'm on the move again. Atlantic provinces on the motorcycle is next, is now!

Oh, and I'll post pics of Boom in the next post...

    Hasta luego a todos!
