Today we had a boat tour of the Beagle Channel. We got on a small boat with wooden interiors and an upper deck. A rainbow appeared as we headed out. The wind was fierce and we were all freezing but enjoying the views. It turned out the waves were too strong to visit the lighthouse, so we headed to a little island. We walked around and the guide gave us some information about the native plants. Back on the boat we sailed past islands with cormorants (which kinda looked like penguins) and two types of seal lion. At this point the boat was rocking pretty aggressively which was both scary and potentially seasickness inducing. I distracted myself by chatting to a woman who is doing two months in South America, to get ideas for our next two months that we haven’t yet planned.
Back on stable land we had lunch at a brewery and then headed into the national park. We went to the “post office at the end of the world,” which must make a killing because it was 17 USD to mail a postcard. But the gentleman running it was quite a character— apparently he opens it whenever he feels like it.
We also went to the spot in the national park that is the end of route 3, that runs 17,000 kilometers up to Alaska. This was the starting point for the guys in Long Way Up. We thought we had popped a tire getting there but it was just very badly paved roads. We saw an interesting bird and overheard a mother and daughter arguing over whether it was a “basic bird” or not (a concept that makes more sense in Spanish). Then it starts to sprinkle so that was our cue to head out.Read more

TravelerIt’s a special plant that grows less than a few inches a year, it makes up most of the islands. Can live over 3000+ years. The whole lump is the living plant and it’s the foundation for most other plants to grow and take life from!
