• Željava Air Base

    1 września 2024, Chorwacja ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

We started the day heading towards Plitvice Lakes, but since we were a bit early to enter the national park, we decided to make an unexpected detour to the Željava Air Base. This abandoned military site, once a top-secret Yugoslav airbase, is now open for those adventurous enough to explore it – and it’s free!

The base was demined in 2017, so it’s considered safe, but you’ll definitely want to bring strong flashlights. The tunnels run deep into the mountainside, and you could easily spend hours wandering through this eerie, fascinating relic of the Cold War.

Unfortunately, we were a bit underprepared in the light department, so we only made it to the entrance. Next time, we’ll come back fully equipped to dive deeper into this incredible place!
