    The adventure begins

We’re officially hitting the road, heading east towards Slovenia and Croatia in our trusty Mercedes Vito! The van is packed to the brim with our favourite snacks, camping gear, and of course, our spirit of adventure.

Our plan? To explore these beautiful countries by car, sleeping under the stars in our tent. We’ve also brought along two cozy camping chairs and a trusty stove for whipping up delicious risottos and pastas in the great outdoors.

Here’s to the start of an amazing road trip! Keep following our journey as we discover new places, cook up tasty meals, and embrace life on the road.

  • Postojna Cave

Our first stop brings us to the breathtaking Postojna Caves in Slovenia. These caves are one of the longest cave systems in Europe, stretching over 24,000 metres! They’re also home to the "olm" or "human fish," a rare and fascinating creature that can live up to 100 years and survive for a decade without food.

The best part? You can explore parts of this stunning underground world on a little train – it’s like stepping into a whole new world beneath the earth!

Next stop: Ljubljana, Slovenia’s charming capital. Stay tuned!

  • Lubjana

We made a quick stop in Ljubljana, where we grabbed a snack and enjoyed a refreshing cocktail by the river. This city never fails to amaze me – it's my second time here, and I’m still blown away by its beauty and the laid-back vibe of its people.

Ljubljana’s old town is a perfect mix of charm and culture, with its picturesque bridges and colourful riverside cafes. It’s also one of Europe’s greenest capitals, with a large pedestrian-only zone, making it a dream to explore on foot.

After a relaxing stroll along the Ljubljanica River, we’re back on the road, heading to our last stop of the day, the Campground!

  • Lubjana Campground

We wrapped up our first day at the Ljubljana campground, where we settled in, set up our tent, and treated ourselves to a delicious risotto alla Milanese. This place is a hidden gem – the facilities are spotless, and the service is top-notch. We’d highly recommend it to any fellow campers!

We almost had a pool party to celebrate the day, but after all that driving and exploring, we were too tired and decided to turn in early. Tomorrow’s another big day, and we’re ready to hit the road bright and early!

  • Željava Air Base

We started the day heading towards Plitvice Lakes, but since we were a bit early to enter the national park, we decided to make an unexpected detour to the Željava Air Base. This abandoned military site, once a top-secret Yugoslav airbase, is now open for those adventurous enough to explore it – and it’s free!

The base was demined in 2017, so it’s considered safe, but you’ll definitely want to bring strong flashlights. The tunnels run deep into the mountainside, and you could easily spend hours wandering through this eerie, fascinating relic of the Cold War.

Unfortunately, we were a bit underprepared in the light department, so we only made it to the entrance. Next time, we’ll come back fully equipped to dive deeper into this incredible place!

  • Plitvice National Park

Finally, we reached the highlight of our trip – Plitvice Lakes National Park! We embarked on a stunning 4-hour hike around the lakes, surrounded by breathtaking views at every turn. The park offers different hiking options, ranging from 2 hours up to 8 hours, and most include scenic boat rides across the crystal-clear waters.

We chose the 4-hour hike with a single boat ride – though, in our opinion, hiking is the way to go! It’s faster, more immersive, and you get to fully appreciate the park's natural beauty. The waterfalls, lakes, and lush greenery made this an unforgettable experience.

  • Borje Campground

After a full day exploring the beauty of Plitvice Lakes, we headed to a nearby spot, Borje Campground, to rest for the night. Unfortunately, our experience wasn’t the best. The showers were not as clean as we’d hoped, and the camping was a bit of a free-for-all with no designated spots. For the price, it didn’t quite feel like we got our money’s worth.

That said, it worked for the night, and we’re ready to move on to new adventures tomorrow!

  • Split

We woke up early and hit the road, driving south towards Split. We made it just in time to secure a spot at the Stobreč Campground – a stroke of luck since they don’t take reservations for stays under four days. After a quick stop at Decathlon to restock gas for our stove, we were off to explore the town.

Split is one of Croatia’s most vibrant cities, known for its rich history and lively atmosphere. The heart of the city is Diocletian’s Palace, a massive Roman fortress that dates back to the 4th century and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The old town is a maze of narrow streets lined with charming cafes, shops, and historic sites. We took a leisurely walk along the Riva promenade, with stunning views of the Adriatic Sea and the bustling marina.

It was the perfect way to end a day on the road before heading back to camp for the night.

  • Camping Stobreč

We stayed at Stobreč Campground for two nights, and it turned out to be a great choice. The campsite has everything you need for a relaxing stay – pools, a spa, cocktail bars, and it’s right on the beach! Although it’s not in the main town, public transportation makes it super easy to get into Split.

We had a fantastic time here and would definitely recommend it for anyone looking for a laid-back spot with plenty of amenities!

  • Split boat trip

Second day in Split! We booked a full-day boat tour, and it turned out to be one of the best experiences of the trip! There were so many tours to choose from at the port, but we went for one that included lunch and stops at three different islands.

The day was amazing—filled with gorgeous views, exploring the islands, and plenty of time for swimming in the crystal-clear waters. However, we were a bit disappointed by the “unlimited drinks” advertised, only to find out it was just free lemonade. Not quite what we were expecting!

Still, the overall experience was great, and it was a perfect way to relax, enjoy the sun, and discover Croatia’s beautiful coast.

  • Zadar

After leaving Split, we arrived in Zadar and found a cheap accommodation right in the old town, close to all the main sights. Once we settled into our room, we took a stroll through the charming streets. The town is filled with history—there are a total of 17 churches just in the old town!

For dinner, we decided to treat ourselves to a meal at Butler, a gourmet restaurant with an incredible menu. The food was AMAZING! They offer a great selection of local dishes and perfectly slow-cooked meats. I highly recommend this spot for anyone visiting Zadar.

As the evening approached, we made our way to the famous Sea Organ. It’s such a unique experience, where tunnels beneath you create mesmerizing sounds while you watch the stunning sunset. Of course, it was packed with people, but it was worth the crowd.

To wrap up the night, we had cocktails at Colonna, Zadar’s first cocktail bar. They serve creative drinks made with local ingredients, and each one was delicious. Another must-visit while you’re in town!

  • Rijeka

We arrived in Rijeka only to be greeted by a violent thunderstorm. Originally, we planned to stay the night on the peninsula, but after the weather hit, we decided to make it a quick stop and continue our journey north into Italy.

The city has an obvious old-world charm, with its worn buildings telling stories of the past, though it seems to be trying to keep up with modern times. That said, the city center didn’t leave much of an impression on me. After a quick lunch, we decided to hit the road and move on.

  • Grado

After driving through Croatia and Slovenia, we finally arrive in Grado, Italy. The weather isn’t the best—it’s raining heavily, so we decided to head out for a few drinks and dinner.

We end up spending the night in a parking lot, opting not to set up the tent due to the strong rain. It’s a bit of a damp end to the trip, but we make the most of it and look forward to better weather.
