Last Full Day in Germany — and of course, we had to go to Würzburg (we are Wurtz’ after all!)

Right beside the Würzburg Christmas Market stands the Marienkapelle, the striking red-and-white Gothic church that anchors the whole square. It was built in the 1300s as a place of healing and hope after the plague, and today it’s one of the most beautiful landmarks in the city.

The carved figures on the front — Adam, Eve, Judith, and Holofernes — were created by Tilman Riemenschneider, one of the greatest sculptors of medieval Europe. He carved them in the late 1400s, capturing both the fall of humanity and God’s deliverance in a single set of sculptures. The originals are in the local museum now, but the replicas still tell the story as you enter the church.

The church was one of the only buildings standing after the British bombers destroyed Würzburg in WWII. The town was rebuilt the way it was before.

A powerful mix of beauty, history, and faith tucked right beside the Christmas Market.

We wandered through the Christmas Market, soaked in the sights, and then decided to take the long, scenic way back. That route took us right past Speyer, so naturally… one more Christmas market!

The atmosphere was magical — lights everywhere, the smell of food in the air.

We grabbed crepes and some mushrooms with garlic sauce, both amazing.

A perfect final evening.
