chilly summer nights.

Mountains, heat and art. Same as yesterday. Well - „Same, same, but different“. This day we first went to Jabiru, the city within the Kakadu National Park. To be honest: it was nice to drive through, but since we were there for the nature, we didn’t stop at all. We went straight to Ubirr to do the second rock art walk. And we were even more impressed than the day before. Not only the displays and pictures are really good visible, they are partly really old and really well explained! Some might be even 1.000 years old, others are from the encounter with the „western world“, some are from the sixties. And every single one of them tells a story (although the art itself is not the most important thing in the culture of the clans here, it is more about the act of painting). I enjoyed walking around here (and there were less flies then the other days).
We also went for to other walks and to the Cahills Crossing and „just“ saw four or five crocodiles (salt water) appearing and disappearing so quietly that it was kinda scary, but also really cool., And we still slept really good that night.

Berge, Hitze und Kunst. Schon ein bisschen wie gestern, aber auch irgendwie ganz anders. Wir fuhren an dem Tag erst durch Jabiru, die Stadt innerhalb des Kakadu Nationalparks. Um ehrlich zu sein: wir hielten nicht an. Aber wir sind ja auch wegen der Natur dort hingefahren. Wir fuhren gleich nach Ubirr um uns die zweite Kunststätte anzuschauen. Und wir waren noch beeindruckter als am Tag zuvor. Nicht nur, dass die Malereien wirklich super gut erkennbar waren, sie waren zum Teil auch richtig alt. Und gut erhalten - und gut erklärt! Manche sind wohl schon über 1.000 Jahre alt, manche erzählen von ersten Begegnungen mit der „westlichen“ Welt, andere sind aus den Sechzigern. Und jede einzelne erzählt eine Geschichte (obwohl es bei der Kunst der hier lebenden Clans weniger um die Zeichnungen selbst, sondern mehr um den Akt des Zeichnens geht). Nickels und ich haben es beide sehr genossen, uns diese Orte anzuschauen.
Und als wäre das noch nicht genug, sind wir noch zum Cahills Crossing gefahren und haben „nur“ vier, fünf (Salzwasser-)Krokodile gesehen, die so lautlos auftauchten und wieder verschwanden, dass es echt ein wenig gruselig war - aber auch ziemlich cool. Wir haben dennoch sehr gut schlafen können in der Nacht.
