Schreiber to Wawa and the Obstacle Course Hike

Our first stop in the morning was Aquasabon Gorge and River. This was a lovely lookout at the end of a short, paved trail.

Driving on, we went to Pukaskwas National Park. We started on the Boardwalk Beach Loop, and continued on the Manito Miikana Trail (they link). The beach was lovely with deep sand (slow walking).

For the Minito Miikana Trail, Charlie's info said it was an easy 1.8 mile hike. Turns out, the park info described it thusly; "uneven natural surfaces, frequent tree roots. Muddy and slippery... Minimal signage, wayfinding skills recommended. Hiking boots and poles recommended." (They left out the part about numerous obstacles). Jane and I joked that we were one stumble away from a hip fracture, while Charlie easily scampered over boulders and up steps. He waited patiently for us as we slowly, carefully picked our way up, up, and up the trail to the clifftop lookouts. And slowly, carefully back down to the beach!

After a picnic lunch, we rested and recovered during our drive to our next destination, Wawa. The name derives from an indigenous name for wild goose. In fact, throughout the town, there are giant goose statues.Read more
