Whilst at Luderitz, we visited Kolmanskop and Elizabeth Bay.
Kolmanskop was built by the Germans to service the local diamond mine. It was abandoned in 1956 and is now a ghost town. The town was home to over 300 adults and 44 children. A few of the buildings have been restored but many are left exactly as they were deserted and now the surrounding dunes are gradually burying them.
Nearby, Elizabeth Bay is also a diamond rich area and was originally mined from 1911 to 1948 – some of the ruins of this mine still stand. It then reopened in about 1991, with a projected minimum lifespan of ten years and today is presently in mothballs waiting to be sold.Baca lagi
