  • Otovalo

    We are now in Otovalo, named for the indigenous tribe that specializes in handicrafts. We took a short stroll, visited the famous market to get a preview (we will shop there tomorrow), and had a great dinner. Cannot believe it is our last day tomorrow.Read more

  • Breakfast at Central Market

    Locals go to Central market for breakfast and lunch. You can have everything from chicken soup to smoothies to empanadas or buy fruit, beef, chickens…

    The stray dogs know this is a good place to come and they are very well behaved. They sit at your feet and wait for you to finish and then they are happy to clean up anything that remains.Read more

  • Plazas los Ponchos

    We are in one of the biggest indigenous markets today and the products are stunning. Prices are incredibly low and my students are having a difficult time making choices. The people are also lovely and you can take pictures with them and they will show you how to wear their clothing, etc.Read more

  • El centro del mundo

    We are standing in the middle of the world as I write this, at Itiñan, the interactive equator museum. Students are doing some equator experiments as well, for example, experiments with gravity and direction of the spin of water going down a drain.

    Interestingly, the original equator monument is in the wrong place because technology did not exist for precision back then. Modern GPS has allowed them to find the correct location.

  • Aya Huma

    This mask represents a spiritual guide named Aya Huma and is used for dancing in indigenous festivals in the highland regions. Aya Huma drives out the bad spirits and bad energy to ensure a good harvest. In the other pictures, Otovalans are weaving in the traditional manner.Read more

  • Virgin el Panecillo

    This location used to be a temple for the indigenous. This statue looks towards the richer part of Quito. Guides tell me this is a bone of contention…she has her back towards the south and locals blame that for crime and poverty. The name is odd…means virgin of the small bun…like piece of bread, bc it’s on a hill.Read more
