Hueyatlalco

Our last stop on our short trip in Mexico is Mexico City, the Capital of no less than 25million people! The 5th largest city in the world and it definitely feels like it. Built on a lake in the middle of a series of Valleys, all available space has been used so there are houses built right into the hillside, driving up and down the little alleys and zigzagging across the hills can be an interesting experience if you are not used to it. Luckily we were met at the airport by Yei and Eduardo, Armelle's friend from University and despite the fact they haven't seen each other in over 7 years we were treated like family. Some of the nicest and kindest people we have had the good fortune to meet this trip and excellent Mexican guides.

This is probably the most authentic Mexican experience that we will have as we stayed with them and they were so happy to show us Mexican culture and especially make us taste all the delicious Mexican food 😋

We started our visit with a tour of the old downtown. Very beautiful old colonial style buildings and an atmosphere like no other, people everywhere selling all kinds of stuff. We ate in an authentic restaurant and tried a plethora of Yei's favourite Mexican foods, Tamales, Pozole, sheep intestins and a bunch of other delicious stuff we didn't identify. On our way back way home, we had to make a stop to meet Yei's Uncle and Aunty and try some Micheladas (beer with spicy tamarind paste on the rim of the glass) and mojitos. The company and drinks made for a very memorable night.

Getting up the next day wasn't that easy but we made it and just in time to meet Eduardo's parents for a typical breakfast close to the house, although it seemed we were driving into smaller and smaller back alleys we eventually arrived at a old farm style house which makes Mexican Barbecue, Barbecoa. Breakfast consisted of a soup called pozole with some blue corn tortillas and some barbecue Lamb that had been cooking overnight. Nothing better to start your day. We stopped by to pick up Uncle and Aunty again and headed in to town to check out a Spanish castle and the Anthropology Museum set in the citys biggest park. Both were very well organised and had some amazing exhibits from Mexico pre-Columbian and national history. It's impressive to see all the artifacts that was done by the Mayas. We learnt that the real Penacho of Moctezuma II, an impressive feathered crown of the last emperor, is in the British museum, one other thing to go and see when we are back home!Read more
