    Navajo History part 2 💛

    September 30 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

Navajo Code Talkers were a group recruited by the Marines to use their complex, unwritten traditional language to create an unbreakable military code during World War II.

They served in major Pacific campaigns, relaying vital orders and saving countless American lives.

The Code Talkers' contributions were kept secret until the program was declassified in 1968. But they did not receive any official honors, including the Congressional Gold Medal in 2001! Most had passed away to receive this recognition.

Native peoples were fighting for a government that did not see them as equals... their right to vote was not fully protected until 1972!

  • Navajo History part 1 💛

    September 30 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

The first time today, a long sleeve top was needed before I headed out the door to learn more about the Navajo people 🤓

I first went to Museum, which included information on the long walk and more on the Navajo code talkers.

    Quick summary...

Westward expansion narratives saw native peoples as obstacles, and by 1863, the Dinè were forced to surrender. A military strategy to destroy anything of value, including food sources, water supplies, crops, and livestock, was implemented.

    They were starved out.

10,000 Dinè were held prisoner until the US Government had searched their land for valuable resources like gold. They were forced to march 300-miles. Only 4000 survived.

In 1868, a treaty was signed, which returned a portion of their homelands.

The land given did not have sufficient carrying capacity for the livestock that families dependent on, and consequently, the Dinè were subject to more US policy.

The federal government argued that overgrazing was causing severe soil erosion and sediment would wash into the Colorado River and clog the newly built Hoover Dam. In 1933, voluntary culling soon changed to forced livestock destruction.

This ended their self-sustaining ways of living.

  • Canyon Floor Tour

    September 29 in the United States ⋅ 🌧 15 °C

The rain continued, but it didn't stop us doing a very wet canyon floor tour!

Frank, our guide, excellent but he forgot to fill up before we started and had to call for backup in case we ran out of petrol 🤭Read more

  • South Rim Drive 🚙

    September 28 in the United States ⋅ 🌧 13 °C

The rain continued 🌧 which meant I was alone on the South Rim tour 😏 Terrill, my guide, explained both the features of the Canyon from a Native viewpoint as well as a little of the history 😥

Kit Carson led a brutal scorched-earth military campaign in 1863 and 1864 that forced thousands of Navajo (Diné) people onto the devastating long walk....more later...

  • Wildcat Trail 👣

    September 28 in the United States ⋅ 🌧 14 °C

The rainy 🌧 start kept people off the walking trails, so I had this one all to myself! 😊

I then headed for some 🍽 before making my way to my next stop, Canyon de Chelly 🚗

  • Navajo Nation ↟𖠰˚☀︎ᨒ↟𖠰

    September 27 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

I was surprised to realise that the accommodation I had booked was literally right under Monument Valley 🤩

I stayed in a local Navajo families Hogan (their round ceremonial building) and ate local Fry Bread Tacos for the first time 😋

I forgot to take a picture of the outside as it was dark when I arrived and was raining the next day. I wanted to head off so I didn't sink in the mile and road back to the highway!

  • National Monuments?! 🤩

    September 27 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 27 °C

I never realised there was a network of National Monuments as well as National Parks... 🤩Google told me that there are 63 National Parks and 138 National Monuments... 🤓

I visited Bears Ears... which was a whistle stop, driving 🚗 the Moki Dugway and hiking the House of Fire Trail 👣

Moki was scary but exciting to drive; a cliffside switchback 3-mile route of unpaved gravel shelf road scaling a massive sandstone cliff with tight hairpin turns and no guardrails!

Again, there is lots more here, and after finding out that Trump has reduced Native Land protection here by 90% for commercial purposes... you really see how precarious Native rights still are...

  • Mesa Verde National Park

    September 27 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

On a recommendation, I took a detour out to this National Park to understand more about Native American origins 🤓

I never knew that they had settlements stretching back thousands of years and that Mesa Verde was one of the places where clans migrated from 👣

    There's more here... (I'm coming back!) 🙏

  • Highway 128 😍

    September 26 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

I was given a tip by a local to drive hwy 128, and I was not disappointed!

It follows the Colorado River, and the views over Monument Valley are incredible... my photos cannot do it justice!

I got chatting in a lay by to a Vietnam Vet 🇻🇳 (Jim) who was also staying in Moab, and so we agreed to meet for food at a Mexican 😋

    Being talkative pays off 😌

  • Devils Garden Trail 👣

    September 26 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

Today was a visit to Arches National Park, and I definitely needed my big girl pants!

I walked the Devils Garden Trail as far as the Double-O Arch, which required lots of climbing and scrambling with shear drop sides... 😬 I am so glad I had my walking pole. It was a great experience, but I was relieved when I made it back down 🤭

They say do I thing every day which scares 😱 you... this was definitely it for today!

After a picnic lunch... I completed my afternoon with the rim trail at Grand Point View...

Unfortunately, again, there is no information on the dispossession of native land. Yet, there was a board that noted the creation of the Wildness Act. What doesn't say is that wilderness without humans had to be created...

Natives were dispossessed of their land to create the idea of wilderness that the National Park Service still promotes today...

Let the research into the resistance begin 🤓

I decided to head to the Museum of Human History, thinking that this might include information about native peoples...

Nope 😒 the name of the museum is definitely misleading... includes history from 1850 onwards... I literally walked out! 😡 but I made it all better with a strawberry and mango 'water ice' (aka sorbie 😋)Read more
