West Coast

Alter I spent most of my time east of the Divide. It is now time to go down the west coast. First stop was at the "Franz Josef Glacier". I couldn't find either Franz nor Josef and the Glacier is way back really small due to the fast melt down! But of course what you get are 1000s of tourists.
My actually destination was the "Copland Tack" anyway. In the early afternoon I could walk along a beautiful and good track alongside the turquoise colored "Copland River". Once passed "Welcome Flat Hut" you also leave the trappers behind! I camped the night at the river a little further upstream at "Welcome Flat". The way past the flats got to be hard work to reach "Douglas Rock Hut" at the top corner of the valley. From there I was planing on going up to "Coopland Pass"(2150m) which goes over to "Mt Cook". Nowadays the access from the east ist very difficult due to declining of the glaciers and rock slips! The day turned out to be surprisingly good with just a few clouds that I went on towards the pass. It used to be a well trotted way, but not anymore I had to fight my way through bush! The upper valley has very impressive views on the high mountain cliffs surrounding you! It was a bit scary to cross all the avalanche paths and know way up there is still a glacier.
The weather didn't allow me to make it quite to the pass. About a kilometre before or 500high meters the clouds and fog were moving in and I went back to the "Douglas Rock Hut" would have been nice to check out the views to the other side!
The next morning was surprisingly very good, considering the weather forcast said 300mm of rain! By the time I went out of the hut a second time it was cloudy again. I decided to just wait a bit and see how it moves, since it is a long way to the pass (for nothing)! A short time after clouds were all over the place and I started walking back out. I stopped by at the famous hot springs at "Welcome Flat Hut" which didn't look to appealing. I just made it about halfway back to "Architect Creek Hut" were I pitched the tent, there were to many mosquitoes and sandflys in the little Hut - guess it is good test for my tent how dry it is! At 12 in night the weather came and rain poured down. 300mm (I actually don't know) later at around 5 in the morning my tent started dripping a bit inside! It didn't stop all day and I was forced to have another night there. Again I was trying to camp, but when I went to bad lighting came as well! I ended up moving the tent into the tiny hut. The next morning looked way more friendly and I moved out of the track. I couldn't actually believe how much the "Copland River" was lower this morning, it must have been around 2m!

Nachdem ich die meiste Zeit Östlich der neu Nseeländischen Alpen verbracht habe, ist es nun Zeit die Westküste nach Süden zu erkunden. Mein erster stop war bei dem “Franz Josef Gletscher. Ich konnte Werder den Franz noch den Josef finden und der Gletscher ist schon sehr weit zurück geschmolzen! Was Ich natürlich vorfand waren tausende Touristen!
Mein eigentliches Ziel war sowieso der “Copland Track“, ein wenig weiter südlich. Am frühen Nachmittag konnte ich dann entlang des türkiesfabenen "Copland" Flusses Richtung der beliebtesten “Welcome Flat Hut“ wandern. Die Nacht habe ich, ein wenig weiter Flussaufwärts am Flussbett, bei den “Welcome Flats“ gezeltet. Ich wollte nämlich Richtung “Douglas Rock“ Hütte und von dort aus zum “Coopland Pass“ (2150m)! Welcher über die Berge zum “Mt Cook“ führt. Früher war dies ein recht beliebte Alpine überqueerung, jedoch ist durch das abschmelzen der Gletscher und diversen Landrutschen der Zugang vom “Mt Cook“ recht schwierig. Der weg nach der “Welcome Flat“ Hütte wurde richtig harte Arbeit, nachdem dies nicht mehr viel besucht ist, ist alles sehr verwachsen.
Das Wetter hat es mir nicht erlaubt den ganzen Weg zum Pass zu gehen und zog sich ca. 1km oder 500 Höhenmeter davor zu. Sodass ich zurück zur “Douglas Rock“ Hütte bin. Der nächste Morgen war wieder überraschend gut, dafür dass 300mm Regen vorhergesagt waren! Jedoch als ich nach dem Frühstück nochmal raus aus der Hütte bin, waren schon ein paar Wolken am Himmel. Ich entschied erstmal ein wenig abzuwarten, da es ein recht länger Weg ist (für nichts). Ein wenig später war es dann auch wieder Neblig. Also ging es wieder zurück raus aus dem Tal. Am Weg hab ich noch einen Abstecher zu den berühmten heißen Quellen bei der “Welcome Flat“ Hütte gemacht, welche aber nicht ganz so einladend aussahen. Ich schaffte ca. die halben Strecke raus und entscheid bei der “Architekt Creek“ Hütte zu bleiben! Jedoch habe ich dort gezeltet, wegen der hohen Anzahl an Mousquitos und Sandfliegen -ein guter test wie dicht das Zelt ist! Um Mitternacht kam das Wetter dann auch -aber wie! 300mm (oder ich weiß nicht wie viel) Regen später um ca 5 Uhr hat mein Zelt dann Innen das tröpfeln angefangen. Das Regnen hörte es den ganzen Tag nicht auf, sodass ich noch eine Nacht bleiben musste. Wieder das halb trockene Zelt aufgebaut, als ich zu Bett gehen wollte kamen auch Blitze! Ich hab entschlossen das Zelt in die sehr kleine Hütte zu bewegen! Der nächste Morgen sah dann aber schon viel freundlicher aus. Und so konnte ich mich auf den Weg raus machen.
Ich konnte gar nicht glauben um wie viel der “Copland“ Fluss zurückgegangen ist, müssen bestimmt 2m gewesen sein!Read more
