After a few days in "Invercargill" (I just didn't want to move), I got along to tackle the way back northwards. I ended up back in Queenstown to go on a "Milford tour". As always it was hard to get accommodation for the night and impossible for the next days! I booked the tour and with heavy rain the bus drove off the next morning. By the time we reached "Te Anau" it actually cleared up and got nice and sunny, perfect conditions! But a little further the road was closed and after an hour waiting we went all the way back!
At least I could re schedule for the day after! Same again but different, I little later the bus picked up a hole bunch of people and there we went on the long drive.
Eventually we even got to "Milford Sound" on a beautifully sunny day. Where we got on the board for a cruise. Despite the fact that it is a fjord and not a sound it was amazing to the the 1000m cliffs coming out of the ocean!
Nachdem ich die letzten Tage in “Invercargill“ verbracht habe, da ich mich nicht bewegen wollte. Wurde es Zeit den Weg nach Norden in Angriff zu nehmen. Am Ende des Tages fand ich mich in “Queenstown“ wieder, wo mal wieder alles ausgebucht war! Aber ich wollte ja an eine “Milford“ Tour.
Los ging es früh am nächsten Morgen bei strömenden Regen. Doch als am wie “Te Anau“ erreichten klarte es auf und wurde schön Wetter (perfekte Bedingungen mit dem Regen davor). Ein wenig weiter war die Straße dann wegen umgefallen Bäumen gesperrt. Nach einer Stunde warten ging es den ganzen Weg zurück! Wenigstens konnte Ich es am nächsten Tag nochmal versuchen.
Gleiche Sache wieder nur etwas anders, wieder hat der Bus einen ganzen häufen Touristen aufgesammelt und Los ging die lange Fahrt.
Diesmal erreichten wir sogar “Milford Sound“! Dort ging es dann auf eine Bootsfahrt durch das Fjord. Was sehr beeindruckend war die 1000m hohen Klippen aus dem Meer zu sehen, trotz der Tatsache dass es ein Fjord ist und kein Sound! Out of the "Rees" valley I went strait on towards the "Greenstone Track" where the "Te Ararora" trail continues on. Due to weather and a bit a confused food packing it turned out that If I ration my food I might be able to reach the supermarket on the way! Therefore save me another hitchhike to Queenstown.
I got fairly lucky witch the lifts down to "Kinloch". Nevertheless the last 10km to the start of the track I needed to walk.
The walk to the "Greenstone Hut" was very easy and could get there quickly in the evening. The Hut was very very busy, not really what I needed after a long day with no lunch! Furthermore the hut warden had the weatherforcast and it said rain and more rain the next days.
The next morning it felt like just in time when I were about to leave it started raining! I went on south to the "Mavora Lakes". Along some flats scrub land it got pretty boggy underfoot!
I were supposed to push on a great deal... But I couldn't resist a nice warm fire in a hut against my tent in the pouring rain! New Zealand and all the nice huts made lazy!
The next morning I made quick progress but I got delayed again and had a earlier day at "Kiwi Hut". Lots of rain and lightening it was good to be inside. Luckily the next morning cleared up a bit and at least stayed dry but it was very windy. Which made walking along the road not really pleasant.
The next section should finally start the fun, up a little saddle it got through bush. Down I mostly slid on clay till I meet the swamp at the bottom! That how it pretty much continue on the next days from forrest to mud to swamp and very tall grass where you don't see were to go! But at least the weather stayed dry, the southerly winds made it a bit cold. I felt fairly tiered and needed a bit more food again so I decided to eat and made a foodrun to "Nightcap". Mental finished with the day I got very, very lucky with a ride and actually could this day push on with just one hour break! Crossing over a farm and then another and another, I made constantly progress down south! I also found a "Kohlrabi" on the way which made up some nice lunch before I got on the climb up to "Bald Hill"(804m). The track was very muddy and specially over the "Longwood Ridgeline" it was swampy and muddy all the way down to "Martin's Hut" (the last Hut on the TA), but I didn't stay there. The forrest felt fresh out of "Jurassic Park" with all the dense bush and ferns around! After a last long but easy and pleasant forrest I got to the road again and found myself all the way down south at "Colac Bay". Now it is just along the beach torwards the "Bluff". I teamed up with two guys passing me (from Austria and USA) which was pretty cool to walk with them. One more long beach section which was pretty fun, we found all sorts of carp along the beach (like 5cans of Vodka mix drink and a deer head).
Eventually we reached "Invercargill", so just one more day!
A perfect morning got us on the way to finish the TA. But first we needed to walk another 34km and the crux would be 16km on the "State Highway 1" and with strong winds against you, it wasn't fun at all! But finally at the Bluff there were another 7km to go which were really nice along the south coast.
Then there it was the "Stirling point" and I guess the pole marks the southern most point in NZ. With 16 others which finished today we had a little party there!

Raus von dem “Rees“ Tal ging es direkt weiter zum “Greenstone Track“,wo der TA weiter geht. Nachdem ich irgendwie zu viel essen mit hatte und auch nicht so lange wie geplant im “Aspiring NP“ blieb, wollte ich versuchen direkt mit dem essen den nächsten Supermarkt am Weg zu erreichen (also aus sieben Tagen, zehn oder mehr machen)!
Glücklicherweise hatte ich recht Glück beim Trampen und war recht fix in “Kinloch“. Allerdings musste ich trotzdem die letzten 10 km zum Track laufen.
Das erste Stück am späten Nachmittag war einfach und recht schnell war ich bei der sehr vollen “Greenstone Hut“. Der Hüttenwart dort hatte noch den Wetterbericht mit Regen die nächsten Tage bevor is is Bett ging. Pünktlich als ich die Hütte verlassen wolle hat es dann auch angefangen zu regnen! Aber wenigsten war ich nun auf den weg nach Süden Richtung “Mavora Lakes“. Das war erste Tag wo ich nicht dahin gelaufen bin, wohin ich eigentlich sollte wegen de Essensplans. Jedoch hat ein warmes Feuer einfach zu gut ausgesehen gegen mein Zelt im strömenden Regen!
Auch an nächsten Tag war die Situation nicht gerade besser, zwar hat es mal aufgehört aber rechtzeitig wieder angefangen, sodass ich nicht den gebrauchen “MEGA Tag“ laufen wollte/konnte. In Begleitung mit Blitz und Donner erreichte ich die “Kiwi Hut“, etwas abseits des eigentlichen Weges!
Wenigsten hat es für den nächsten Abschnitt auf der Straße aufgehört zu regnen, jedoch war es noch sehr windig. Mit den Wind von Süden wird es immer recht kalt in “Neu Seeland“. Ich quälte mich also entgegen des Windes zu einer vollen Hütte - klar! Man kann ja auch mit dem Auto hinfahren!
Spätestens am nächsten Tag bestätigte sich, was Ich mir eh schon gedacht habe, dass der letzte Abschnitt eher Mental herausfordernd wird als Körperlich! Durch den dicht bewachsenen Weg hoch zu einem kleinen Bergsattel war noch alles in Ordnung, runter ging es dann schon auf rutschigem Lehm und auf der anderen Seite angekommen ging es durch Sumpf and Schlamm inmitten durch sehr hohes Gras. Wo man natürlich nicht gesehen hat wo es hingeht, so fällt man dann schon ab und an in einen kleinen versteckten Bach (oder Löcher)!
So ging es ziemlich für die nächsten 2 Tage. Bis ich eine Farm durchqueeren musste und danach noch eine und eine weitere. Das gute war am Weg hab ich einen “Kohlrabi“ “gefunden“, welcher eine ziemlich nette Abwechslung für das Mittagessen darstellte.
Bevor es hoch zum “Bald Hill“(804m) ging, auch dieser Abschnitt war wieder sehr schlammig, wenigsten war es wenig weiter im “Longwood Forest" wie frisch aus "Jurassic Park“! Nicht das es hier weniger schlammig gewesen wäre, aber wenigstens kam ich immer weiter nach Süden. Vorbei an “Martin's Hut“ (letzte Hütte auf dem TA) ging durch ein letztes Stück Wald was recht einfach war und durchaus recht schön!
Dann bin ich auch schon in “Colac Bay“ angekommen, im Süden war Ich schon mal jetzt heißt es nur noch das letzte Stück zum “Bluff“! Am Stand wurde ich dann auch noch eingeholt von zwei Burschen (aus Österreich und der USA), denen ich mich gleich mal anschloss. War ganz witzig mit denen zu wandern. Noch einen langen Strand Abschnitt, wo wir alle möglichen Sachen gefunden haben. Angefangen hätten wir mal mit recht schönen Muscheln auch die 5Dosen Vodka mix Getränk waren noch recht nützlich. Aber spätestens bei einem packet, wir hatten ja schon eine Große Überraschung erwartet war es dann auch, nämlich einen Reh Kopf hatte keiner erwartet! Irgendwann kamen wir dann auch nach “Invercargill“. So nur mehr ein Tag bis zum Ziel!
Ein wunderbarer Sonnenaufgang brachte uns auf den weg für das letzte Stück. Die letzten 34km sollten sich nochmal als harte Arbeit erweisen. Mit starkem Gegenwind ging es für 16km auf den “State Highway 1“, nun ja es war nicht wirklich witzig dort zu laufen - Alles Kopfsache hier! Wenigstens waren die letzten 7km wunderschön entlang der Südküste. Gegen 15Uhr erreichte ich dann endlich den “Stirling Point“ oder das Wegschild, was anscheinend den Endpunkt (Südlichster Punkt in NZ) markieren sollte. Mit 16 anderen, welche heute das letzte Stück gemeistert haben, hatten wir fast ein kleines Freudenfest.

Finally in "Wanaka" I stayed two nights at the campground. Because everything else was booked out! There was also the "Wanaka Challenge", a sports event (just like a Iron Man), on the next day. I got myself peeled out of bed fairly early to watch the start. The road into the "Aspiring NP" was closed for the event anyway!
That was were I was going the next day. At around midday I could start along a hole bunch of tourists to walk up to the "Rob Roy Glacier", a quite nice walk and good views at the end of the Glacier! It seemed like you could climb further on to the top of the valley but since I had still a long walk ahead of me this afternoon I skiped the idea.
The destination for the night was "Liverpool Hut"(1080m). After quite a long walk along the flat valley floor I came to the last accent.
The 600m climb up should turn out quite interesting, over partly slippery rock and 2m drops! But I finally made it to the nearly full hut. Since it was quite late and I didn't want to search spot to pitch a tent, I just slept under the stars in the deck. Very glad I didn't sleep with 13 others in a 10bunk hut!
The next morning I took it a bit easier and after I looked a bit after the hut, I went down and back to the "Aspiring Hut" where the turn off to the "Cascade Saddle"(1524m) is.
Well the wall behind the Hut looked pretty insane steep to get up there. A little through the forrest to there bushline. Then the fun started to actually get steep with a nice little warning sign, which couldn't stop me anyway!
So up I went the steep slope, having just a few little foodholes to climb up in places! With the views getting better and better, close to the top (which you cross over at actually ~1800m) there is another warning that the most dangerous part is to come. It turned out to be probably one of the easiest of the hole climb! The views over the valley and on to "Mt Aspiring" were fantastic. A little further on down into a valley on the plateau, I found the toilet which marked the campsite. With not much views around I went a bit off and found something a bit better where I at least could see the peak of "Aspiring" (Apparently it is comparable with the Matterhorn!)
Again I'm glad I camped away from the toilet, later the next day I found out, the other campers got trouble with the "Kea's" - remember? - and their tarp and a bag got torn up!
But first I had a relaxed morning, in hope the clouds would clear up. But it didn't happen till I were way down into the "Dart valley". On the way I had a most impressive view on the "Dart Glacier" and the high mountain's around there!
After lunch at "Dart Hut" (big, fancy and popular place) I went on over the "Rees Saddle"(1471m) to "Shelter Rock Hut" the walk was actually quite nice and spectacular.
The last bit out to the car Park was long and boring and it started to rain which didn't really help!
Endlich mal wieder in Wanaka und mal wieder war alles ausgebucht, sodass ich auf den Campingplatz musste. Am nächsten Tag war aber auch ein Sport Event in der Stadt, die “Wanaka Challenge" (eigentlich wie ein Iron Man). Ich stand also früh auf um den Start anzusehen, im laufe des Tages schaute ich noch ab und zu mal vorbei. Die Straße zum “Mt Aspiring NP" war sowieso gesperrt für das event.
Dass war genau wo ich hin wollte am nächsten Morgen. Mittags konnte ich dann endlich zum gehen anfangen, als erstes zum recht beliebten “Rob Roy Glacier“. Ein eigentlich recht schöne Wanderung mit einem super Blick auf den Gletscher. Doch das Ziel für die Nacht, die “Liverpool Hut“(1080), war noch in weiter ferne. Entlang des “East Matukituki“ Tal ging es vorbei an der “Aspiring Hut“ zum Fuß des “Mt Liverpool“.
Zum sehr steilen rund 600m Anstieg hoch zur Hütte! Es entwickelte sich zu einem Teil recht interessanten kletterei mit rutschigem Gestein und 2m Absätzen, aber 1,5 Stunden später erreichte ich dann eigentlich die Hütte!
Am fortgeschritten Nachmittag wollte ich nicht mehr einen Platz fürs Zelt suchen, sodass ich einfach auf der Terrasse unter den Sternen geschlafen habe (Etwas kalt und windig aber sehr froh nicht mit 13 anderen, in einer 10 Matratzen Hütte, zu Schafen)!
Am nächsten Morgen ging es gemütlicher zu gange, nachdem ich die Hütte etwas auf Vordermann gebracht habe, ging auf den Abstieg und zurück zu “Aspiring Hut“. Wo die Abzweigung zum “Cascade Saddle“ (1524m) ist.
Die Bergkette hinter der Hütte sah schon recht beeindruckend und sehr steil aus. Doch genau da musste ich hoch, ein nettes warn Schild konnte mich jedoch auch nicht stoppen. Ein wenig durch den Wald bis zur Baumgrenze, wo der Spaß dann angefangen hat richtig steil zu werden. Zum Teil nur mit kleinen Fußtritten zum hoch klettern ging es immer weiter nach oben! Mit immer besseren Blick über das Tal gab es für das letzte Stück nochmal ein Achtungs Zeichen, was sich aber aus eines der einfacheren Stücke erweisen sollte, bis ich schließlich auf die Kette bei rund 1800m ankam. Wo ich einen fantastischen Blick auf “Mt Aspiring“ hatte (anscheinend vergleichbar mit dem Matterhorn), sowie einen rundum Blick. Ein wenig weiter, im Hochplateau Tal, fand ich dann die Toilette welche anscheinend die Campsite markiert. Aber mit keinem guten Blick war es nicht genau das wonach ich gesucht hatte, also ging es etwas abseits wo ich letztendlich mein Zelt wenigstens mit Blick auf den Gipfel aufbauen konnte. Später am nächsten Tag erfuhr ich, dass die anderen Camper bei der Toilette, Probleme mit den Kea's hatten welche Zelt und Rucksack aufgerissen haben! Zuvor ging es jedoch endlich zum Sattel. Mit bewölketem Wetter aber trodden wunderbarem Blick auf die Berge und dem “Dart Gletscher“ ging es hinunter in das “Dart“ Tal.
Nachdem Mittag machen an der beliebten “Dart“ Hütte ging es noch über den “Rees Saddle“ (1471m) zur “Shelter Rock Hut“. Ein recht schöne Wanderung mit spektakulären blicken. Das letzte Stück aus dem Tal zum Parkplatz war lang und eher langweilig, auch hat es angefangen zu Regen es nicht gerade geholfen hat!Read more

Alter I spent most of my time east of the Divide. It is now time to go down the west coast. First stop was at the "Franz Josef Glacier". I couldn't find either Franz nor Josef and the Glacier is way back really small due to the fast melt down! But of course what you get are 1000s of tourists.
My actually destination was the "Copland Tack" anyway. In the early afternoon I could walk along a beautiful and good track alongside the turquoise colored "Copland River". Once passed "Welcome Flat Hut" you also leave the trappers behind! I camped the night at the river a little further upstream at "Welcome Flat". The way past the flats got to be hard work to reach "Douglas Rock Hut" at the top corner of the valley. From there I was planing on going up to "Coopland Pass"(2150m) which goes over to "Mt Cook". Nowadays the access from the east ist very difficult due to declining of the glaciers and rock slips! The day turned out to be surprisingly good with just a few clouds that I went on towards the pass. It used to be a well trotted way, but not anymore I had to fight my way through bush! The upper valley has very impressive views on the high mountain cliffs surrounding you! It was a bit scary to cross all the avalanche paths and know way up there is still a glacier.
The weather didn't allow me to make it quite to the pass. About a kilometre before or 500high meters the clouds and fog were moving in and I went back to the "Douglas Rock Hut" would have been nice to check out the views to the other side!
The next morning was surprisingly very good, considering the weather forcast said 300mm of rain! By the time I went out of the hut a second time it was cloudy again. I decided to just wait a bit and see how it moves, since it is a long way to the pass (for nothing)! A short time after clouds were all over the place and I started walking back out. I stopped by at the famous hot springs at "Welcome Flat Hut" which didn't look to appealing. I just made it about halfway back to "Architect Creek Hut" were I pitched the tent, there were to many mosquitoes and sandflys in the little Hut - guess it is good test for my tent how dry it is! At 12 in night the weather came and rain poured down. 300mm (I actually don't know) later at around 5 in the morning my tent started dripping a bit inside! It didn't stop all day and I was forced to have another night there. Again I was trying to camp, but when I went to bad lighting came as well! I ended up moving the tent into the tiny hut. The next morning looked way more friendly and I moved out of the track. I couldn't actually believe how much the "Copland River" was lower this morning, it must have been around 2m!
Nachdem ich die meiste Zeit Östlich der neu Nseeländischen Alpen verbracht habe, ist es nun Zeit die Westküste nach Süden zu erkunden. Mein erster stop war bei dem “Franz Josef Gletscher. Ich konnte Werder den Franz noch den Josef finden und der Gletscher ist schon sehr weit zurück geschmolzen! Was Ich natürlich vorfand waren tausende Touristen!
Mein eigentliches Ziel war sowieso der “Copland Track“, ein wenig weiter südlich. Am frühen Nachmittag konnte ich dann entlang des türkiesfabenen "Copland" Flusses Richtung der beliebtesten “Welcome Flat Hut“ wandern. Die Nacht habe ich, ein wenig weiter Flussaufwärts am Flussbett, bei den “Welcome Flats“ gezeltet. Ich wollte nämlich Richtung “Douglas Rock“ Hütte und von dort aus zum “Coopland Pass“ (2150m)! Welcher über die Berge zum “Mt Cook“ führt. Früher war dies ein recht beliebte Alpine überqueerung, jedoch ist durch das abschmelzen der Gletscher und diversen Landrutschen der Zugang vom “Mt Cook“ recht schwierig. Der weg nach der “Welcome Flat“ Hütte wurde richtig harte Arbeit, nachdem dies nicht mehr viel besucht ist, ist alles sehr verwachsen.
Das Wetter hat es mir nicht erlaubt den ganzen Weg zum Pass zu gehen und zog sich ca. 1km oder 500 Höhenmeter davor zu. Sodass ich zurück zur “Douglas Rock“ Hütte bin. Der nächste Morgen war wieder überraschend gut, dafür dass 300mm Regen vorhergesagt waren! Jedoch als ich nach dem Frühstück nochmal raus aus der Hütte bin, waren schon ein paar Wolken am Himmel. Ich entschied erstmal ein wenig abzuwarten, da es ein recht länger Weg ist (für nichts). Ein wenig später war es dann auch wieder Neblig. Also ging es wieder zurück raus aus dem Tal. Am Weg hab ich noch einen Abstecher zu den berühmten heißen Quellen bei der “Welcome Flat“ Hütte gemacht, welche aber nicht ganz so einladend aussahen. Ich schaffte ca. die halben Strecke raus und entscheid bei der “Architekt Creek“ Hütte zu bleiben! Jedoch habe ich dort gezeltet, wegen der hohen Anzahl an Mousquitos und Sandfliegen -ein guter test wie dicht das Zelt ist! Um Mitternacht kam das Wetter dann auch -aber wie! 300mm (oder ich weiß nicht wie viel) Regen später um ca 5 Uhr hat mein Zelt dann Innen das tröpfeln angefangen. Das Regnen hörte es den ganzen Tag nicht auf, sodass ich noch eine Nacht bleiben musste. Wieder das halb trockene Zelt aufgebaut, als ich zu Bett gehen wollte kamen auch Blitze! Ich hab entschlossen das Zelt in die sehr kleine Hütte zu bewegen! Der nächste Morgen sah dann aber schon viel freundlicher aus. Und so konnte ich mich auf den Weg raus machen.

Alter one week relaxing it was time for me to get back to business. With a few more good days forecasted I went back north to "Arthur's Pass" where a local classic tramp was waiting for me! I was very lucky with the hitchhiking, again. That I got there in just one day! Quickly saved the last bad in the YHA hostel- I didn't want to camp out with the aggressive "Kea's" there! The next morning I was a bit confused what to do and not to do (mainly because of the weather) but finally I got on my way I updated the classic route of the "Three Passes" with the "Crow Hut" route!
Up up up I went the 1100m climb up to "Avalanche Peak"(1833m) traversed the peak to the south that I was able to drop down to the "Crow" valley, way north of the peak. Downwards it went very steep and slippery on loose scree. I didn't intent to but I bypassed the nice and new "Crow Hut" and pushed on all the way to "Carrington Hut"!
With the next beautiful sunny morning I made my way up the steep "Taipoiti" river gorge to the "Harman Pass" (1321m)! So far so good, so far it is a fairly well trotted way, here was the junction were I turned off forwards the "Withehorn Pass"(1753m) and the west coast. I already was able to see up the snowy gully to the "Horn'y" peak to the left! A pretty amazing view and the river cuts underneath you through the snow and ice! The walk itself was really something special in my tramping adventure but unfortunately the views at the top were just average! Down the other side (same thing as always very steep on scree) to the river. While the way up was fairly obvious now I had lots to do with trackfinding! I was very glad to arrive at the "Park-Morpeth Hut". A gorgeous sunrise the next morning, it couldn't get me going to early since the "Browning Pass"(1411m) had a nice with cap! I was hoping that the clouds would vanish by the time I made my way up there, but they didn't!
Therefore I couldn't really see much of the "Browning Lake", but what I could see was very nice! On the way down I could get close to a "native" "Kea" looking for food, which was good to see (not just the feed up once from stupid tourists)! The rest was straightforward to "Hokitika".
Ps: Kea bird is a alpine parrot, which is pretty smart. But can get pretty nasty (e.g destroying tens) when people feed them!
Nach meiner Erholungs Woche am “Mt Cook“, ging es, mit ein paar guten Tagen im Wetterbericht im Gepäck, wieder north zurück zum “Arthur's Pass“! Dort wartete ein bei den Einheimischen berühmter Wanderweg auf mich. Bei dem Trampen dorthin hatte ich wieder mal super Glück und konnte so die ganze Strecke an einem Tag zurück legen! Am Abend habe ich mir dann auch noch das letzte Bett in der Jugendherberge gesichert, da ich nicht mit den aggressiven “Kea“ Vögeln Zelten wollte. Gutes Wetter am nächsten Morgen brachte mich dann auch gleich so durcheinander das ich total verplant war, was und was nicht zu machen (vor allem wegen dem Wetterwechsel in ein paar tagen). Aber. Letztendlich ging es dann los mit einem kleinen Update, über die “Crow“ Hütte, zum klassischen “Drei Pässe“ Weg!
Los ging es mit einem recht guten 1100m Anstieg rauf auf den Gipfel des "Avalanche Peak"(1833m). Um südlich einmal unter dem Gipfel nach Norden zu travesieren, wo ich letztendlich, kurz vor dem “Mt Rollerston“, sehr steil auf losen Geröll runter in das “Crow“ Tal ging. Eigentlich wollte ich bei der neuen “Crow“ Hütte bleiben, jedoch mit dem Wetter im Hinterkopf, ging es direkt weiter zur “Carrington“ Hütte, wo Ich am späten Abend ankam.
Am nächsten Morgen suchte ich mich meinen Weg nach oben entlang des “Taipoiti“ Flusses und dessen Schlucht. Nach kurzer Zeit kam ich endlich zum “Harman Pass" (1321m). “So weit so gut“ - Bis hier hin war es noch ein gut besuchter Weg, doch hier war meine Abzweigung weiter nach oberen zum “Withehorn Pass"(1753m). Ich konnte entlang des schneebedeckten Schlucht schon Richtung Pass sehen! Der weg dort hoch über dem unter den Eis liegenden Bach, war definitiv etwas besonders in meinem Wander Abenteurer. Jedoch war der Blick vom Pass nicht ganz so überragend. Der Abstieg auf der anderen Seite war das gleiche wie immer (steil auf losem Geröll). Ich hatte jede Menge damit zu tun einen Weg zu finden und war somit recht froh als ich endlich zur "Park-Morpeth“ Hütte kam! Am nächsten Tag konnte mich auch ein super Morgen nicht in Bewegung bringen, da der “Browning Pass“ (1411m) noch eine wunderschöne weiße Kappe auf hatte! Die Hoffnung dass diese weg ist, bis ich dort oben ankomme, wurden nicht erfüllt. So konnte ich gar nicht viel vom Bergsee “Browning“ sehen, jedoch was ich sah war super! Am Abstieg auf der anderen Seite könne ich dann noch einen “natürlichen Kea“ betrachten, der gerade auf Essens suche war- Eine erfreuliche Erscheinung! Der Rest des Weges nach “Hokitika“ war dann wieder auf einem Trampelpfad im Wald, entlang des “Styx“ Flusses.
Ps: Kea ist ein vom aussterben bedrohter Alpin-Papagai, welcher sehr schlau ist! Jedoch auch sehr unangenehm werden kann (z.b. Zelte zerstören), wenn Touristen diese Vögel füttern!Read more

In the morning I got picked up for my new job as hut warden! After a short briefing and two cups of coffee -"Yippie"- I was on my way to the 1000m climb up to the "Mueller Hut". It's 5th generation (there are some funny story's of the huts) sits at 1800m on the "Sealy Range" with stunning views over to the "Hooker Valley" and "Mt Cook"(3755m) on the end! But the most impressive views were right across the "Mueller Glacier" to "Mt Sefton"(3151m). On which some small avalanches going of every day! The hut itself was big but nothing to special.
After my daily cleaning schedule and a radio session in the evening. It was pretty laid back, just enjoying the views and lots of food! I had some amazing sunsets/ sunrises and a couple nights a clear night sky. One day I went up to "Mt Ollivier"(1938m) and explored a bit around the "Sealy Range" but that's really all.
Nun war es soweit mich als Freiwilliger Huttenwart zu engagieren. Am Morgen wurde ich von der Unterkunft abgeholt. Im Visitor Center gab es dann noch eine kurze Einweisung und zwei Tassen Kaffee -“Hurra“-, dann war ich schon auf dem weg die 1000 Höhenmeter zur Hütte hochzuklettern! Die 5te Generation (eine Unterhaltsame Geschichte) der “Mueller Hütte“ sitzt auf 1800m auf der “Sealy“ Bergkette. Mit sagenhaften Ausblick auf das “Hooker“ Gletschertal wo am Ende auch “Mt Cook“(3755m) zu finden ist. Aber den besten Blick hat man auf “Mt Sefton“(3151m), an dessen steilen Felswänden täglich kleine Lawinen abgingen!
Nach dem täglichen Huttenrundgang und putzen sowie eine Funk Übertragung am Abend war alles sehr entspannt! Sozusagen nur das viele Essen dass ich mühsam hochgeschlept habe verputzen und die Aussicht genießen! Es gab ein paar sagenhafte Sonnenaufgänge/ untergänge und sogar ein paar wolkenlose Nächte um nach Sternen zu schauen! From "Wanaka" it was time to leave torwards "Mt Cook" NP, where I will be a volunteer hut warden at the 1st of February! But before I needed to get there. Very lucky circumstances got me into a elderly German couple which were going there and even needed to go shopping as I did, furthermore there were so friendly to give me a ride! 3days left but with big plans to go, I signed in at the Visitor Centre and went strait of to the tiny 3bunk "Ball Shelter"! From were I was intending to climb up to to "Ball Pass"(2121m). Actually I wanted to do the hole "Ball Pass crossing" but I would require a ice axe for it.
The morning cloud vanished by 10am and I started climbing up! No marked track just boulders and loose scree made it quite a fun undertaking! Just kind of along the ridgeline and avoiding the bluffs.
I didn't quite made it to the "Ball Pass" since clouds were coming in. I just made it to a peak(1936m)on the way, which had more as impressive views on "Mt Cook"(3755m) and the “Ball Glacier“.
Down I actually could see were I would have needed to go for an easy way up!
The next day back out to the Visitor Centre to check out and strait in again for the next trip up to "Sefton Bivvy"(~1660m). Quickly a few tips and notes of the not available track then I was on my way.
The 800m climb just took 2h and was very steep and with some scrambling torwards the rocky end. Again I'm pretty sure I didn't take the right way up, since down was fairly easy and not really a scramble... But up there I was rewarded by an awesome little Bivvy right on the 1000m towering cliff of "Mt Foodstool" (2765m) and just behind the Hut a glacier cracking! In the night I woke up from a monstrous sound coming from a icy monolith cracking down the slope, nevertheless once awake I could have a view at the clear night sky. But the actually reason to go up there is the scenic "open air" toilet -probably the toilet I with the best views in hole New Zealand!
But I guess sometimes picture's describe it better then words!
Von "Wanaka" ging es diesmal in Richtung “Mt Cook“ National Park. Dort werde ich mich nächste Woche als freiwilliger Hüttenwart engagieren. Doch zuvor musste ich erstmal die doch relativ lange Strecke Trampen! Glücklicherweise war das zweite Auto welches mit mitnahm ein älteres Deutsches Ehepaar was selbst auf den Weg dort hin war und anbot mich mitzunehmen. Doch damit nicht genug, sie mussten auch noch -wie Ich- einkaufen gehen!
So könnte ich am späten Nachmittag noch im Visitor Center meine Pläne eintragen und mich dann auf den Weg zur kleinen “Ball Shelter“ Hütte machen. Von wo aus es am nächsten Tag hoch zum “Ball Pass“(2121m) gehen sollte. Eigentlich wollte ich die ganze “Ball Pass“ Überqueerung machen, jedoch schaut die andere Seite etwas zu heftig aus in der kurzen Zeit und ohne Eisaxt. Da wie ziemlich alles im Park kein “richtiger“ Weg vorhanden ist!
Der nächste Morgen war jedoch sehr bewölkt, glücklicherweise verzogen sich die aber gegen den späten Vormittag. Hoch ging es steil über losses Geröll und Felsen, dass ganze großteils ohne Weg. Eigentlich recht einfach, entlang es Grades und nur die Klippen vermeiden! Jedoch bin ich trotzdem etwas zu weit abseits gelandet, was den Weg merklich erschwerte! Mit dem späten Start und sich schon wieder zu ziehendes Wetter habe ich es nicht ganz zum Pass geschafft und musste mich mit einem Gipfel(1936m) am Weg zufrieden geben! Jedoch mit nicht weniger beeindruckenden Blick auf “Mt Cook“(3755m) und dem “Ball“ Gletscher. Runter ging es um ein gutes leichter, entlang des “richtigen“ Pfades und einer gelegentlichen Trampelspur!
Am nächsten Morgen ging es zurück ins Visitor Center um mich zurück zu melden und gleich wieder einzutragen für das “Sefton Bivvy“! Noch kurz (im Obersterreichischen Dialekt - zu geil!) die Wegbeschreibung, vom nicht vorhandenen Weg bekommen, dann war Ich wieder auf dem Weg! Für den steilen ~800m Anstieg bräuchte ich auch nur 2h. Zwei nette Markierung am Weg könnte man auch gleich sehen wenn man dran vorbei gelaufen ist! Das letzte Stück musste ich richtig klettern, belohnt wurde ich jedoch mit der kleinen “Sefton Bivvy“(~1660m) Hütte! Auch hier bin ich mir wieder ziemlich sicher dass der weg hinauf nicht ganz der richtige war, da es runter eher wieder Richtung gehen und nicht klettern ging!
Am Fuße des sich rund 1000m auftürmenden “Mt Footstool“(2764m) und einem knackenden Glätscher direkt hinter der Hütte, war die Aussicht schon sehr beeindruckend.
Mitten in der Nacht wurde ich von röhrenden lauten krachen von einem zusammen fallenden Eismonolithen des Glätschers geweckt. So könnte ich aber die Möglichkeit nutzen um den klaren Sternenhimmel anzusehen! Der eigentliche Grund den Anstieg auf sich zu nehmen ist aber die aussichtsreiche Freiluft Toilette -wahrscheinlich das Klo mit dem besten Blick in ganz Neu Seeland!

Alter just one night in Queenstown where I had to decide what to do with not enough time to finish the TA and a bad weather forecast! I ended up taking a bus back to "Wanaka" and hitched to the "Young Valley" in hope the weather will be better then the forecast for the next 10days!
Late in the afternoon after I crossed the slow but very deep "Makarora River" I finally could walk for another hour before dark.
I quite promising next morning gave me hope. Quickly I moved to the "Young Hut" and was ready for a big day over the “Gillipsie Pass“! But once I got up the really impressive "Upper Young Valley" The weather closed in and I needed to retreat to the Hut!
Rain and fog the next day made me stay as well. I at least I got out to get some wood and lit up the Stove! While I was wet anyway I walked up to the really impressive and beautiful upper valley again!
And what a surprise the weather stayed the same. Another party promised the weather might turn better in a few days! I went over the Pass, with no views, to the "Sabine Hut"!
There it was were the fun part started! In the afternoon it started to rain and over the night we had heavy showers. I wanted to do a short side trip anyway to the "Lake Crucible", but some of the River crossings on the way were already a bit of a challenge. The lake at a plateau in a mountain valley, which was very impressive again with its high cliffs, was the coolest thing ever!
A dark blue lake with some icebergs in it -must be so cool to swim in it when it is sunny!
The next 3 days weather stayed the same and from time to time the heavy rain picked even more up! With all the rivers and hundreds of waterfalls really going I couldn't really move forth and back! The hut, stove and the Bing window with quite a view into the "Sebiria Valley" were my best friends.
Finally the weather improved a bit and I moved a second time over the "Gillipsie Pass" with no views at all to get back out via a high water track!
Back in Wanaka I stopped there overnight!
Ps: The everchanging weather forecast turned out to be right!
Eine Nacht in “Queenstown“, wo ich entscheiden musste was Ich mache bis es zum “Mt Cook“ geht. Die Zeit etwas zu knapp um den TA fertig zu machen ging es zurück nach “Wanaka“. Am selben Abend ging es dann auch noch direkt weiter in das “Young Valley“ trotz der sehr schlechten Wettervorhersage. Ich müsste durch den sehr tiefen aber langsam fließenden “Makarora“ Fluss bevor ich dann noch eine Stunde vor der Dunkelheit laufen konnte!
Ein viel versprechender Morgen machte mir Hoffnungen, sodass ich das Tempo erhöhte, Damit ich in einem langen Tag über den “Gillipsie Pass“ gehen kann! Jedoch am oberen Tal Ende angekommen wurde was Wetter schlecht und zwang mich zurück zur “Young Hütte“! Der nächste Morgen war sehr verregnet. Ich ging nur für etwas Feuerholz vor die Türe, aber einmal nass bin ich dann doch noch in das sehr eindrucksvolle obere Talende gelaufen!
Eine Australische Gruppe machte mir Hoffnungen auf besseres Wetter in ein paar Tagen, sodass ich im Nebel über den “Gillipsie Pass“ zur “Sebiria“ Hütte gelaufen bin. Wo der Spaß dann angefangen hat! Am Nachmittag hat es angefangen zu Regen und über dir Nacht hatte Ich heftigen Regen. Ich wollte eh nur zu einem Bergsee "Lake Crucible" laufen, jedoch waren die Bach queerungen schon ein interessantes Unterfangen. Belohnt wurde ich mit einem richtig “lässigen“ See! Seine Dunkelblaue Farbe mit weißen Eisfelsen darin schwimmend - muss ziemlich cool sein darin schwimmen zu gehen, wenn schönes Wetter ist!
Die nächsten 3 Tagen sollten sich zum heftigen Dauerregen entwickeln und der Holzofen und das große Panorama Fenster der “Sebiria“ Hütte, in das obere “Sebiria“ Tal sollten sich als meine besten Freunde erweisen!
Mit den reißenden Flüssen und stürzenden Wasserfällen war ein weiter und/ oder zurück gehen unmöglich!
Aber Tag acht brachte ein wenig besseres Wetter mit sich, sodass ich ein zweites mal über den “Gillipsie Pass“, ohne eine Aussicht zu haben, gegangen bin. So konnte ich einen Hochwasser weg, aus dem Tal nehmen.
Zurück in “Wanaka“ gönnte ich mir eine Nacht, in der fast komplett ausgebuchten Stadt.Read more

From the town I followed the shore of "Lake Wanaka" around.
And half way around while I stopped to tie my boots, "Audrey" popped up from behind!
It was nice to see her again. Together we walked to the "Motatapu Alpine Track".
A fairly easy walk but the next day was supposed to be quite a hard one.
I call it the "3x3" (three times up, over and down). The way from the Hut climbed steeply up to the "Jack Halls Saddle" (1275m). Then followed some ridge line down to the next hut. Climbed up to saddle no.2 just to descent most of the way back down into the valley. And climbed steeply out of it again to another saddle. One last steep descent brought us to "Roses Hut". Unfortunately for all that we had very cloudy weather, I still enjoyed the sweeping fog passing over. For breakfast we had to climb up 470m to "Roeses Saddle". Afterwards we descended down to the "Arrow River" and since the water level was low and it is apparently faster to stay down in the river instead of taking the high route, we plunged our way down to "Macetown". The old mining town has now a population of 0! Along an old 4x4 track we walked torrwards "Arrowtown". While it was so easy we missed the turnoff of the TA and stayed on the "bad weather route"(with now a bit sunshine) all the way to town!
The last 30km to Queenstown were quite a fight along an easy but partly hard to follow bicycle trail. We were more as glad once we reached our hostel! We cooked delicious burritos together, for dinner!
I guess that it for now with the TA tail but don't worry I will finish it later on!
Von “Wanaka“ ging es entlang des Ufers, des gleichnamigen Sees in Richtung “Motatapu Alpine Track“. Auf halben weg musste ich meine Schuhe neu binden und siehe da wer da von hintern daher kommt -“Audrey“!
Zusammen haben wir uns dann auf den weiteren weg gemacht. Ein am Ende recht einfacher Tag. Jedoch sollte sich das am nächsten Tag ähndern, oder wie ich ihn nenne den “3x3“(dreimal hoch, rüber und runter)! Von der Hütte ging es steil Bergauf zu dem “Jack Halls Sattel“(1275m) und entlang eines Grates wieder nach unten zur nächsten Hütte. Zwar recht nett hier jedoch war der Tag noch nicht zu Ende! Von hier aus ging es wieder sehr steil Bergauf zum Saddle Nr.2, nur um steil den meisten weg nach unten ins Tal zu gehen! Ein letzter steiler Anstieg zum dritten Sattel und noch einmal ein ewig länger Abstieg hinunter zur “Roses“ Hütte. Leider hatten wir für dass alles sehr bewölktes Wetter, trotzdem konnte ich die vorbei ziehenden Nebelfelder genießen!
Zum Frühstück gab es dann noch einmal einen Anstieg von 470m zum “Roses“ Sattel, danach ging es hinunter zum Fluss “Arrow“. Welchen wir entlang plantschen in Richtung “Macetown“. Eine alte Goldminen Stadt mit einer Einwohnerzahl von heute 0!
Danach ging es auf einer alten Forststraße nach “Arrowtown“. Und weil alles gleich so einfach zu laufen war verpassen wir auch gleich die Wegzweigung des TA und liefen den “schlecht Wetter Weg“(bei mittlerweile ein wenig Sonnenschein) in die Stadt!
Die letzten 30km nach “Queenstown“ sollten sich als ein harter Kampf herausstellen. Zwar war alles recht einfach zu laufen, jedoch war die Navigation etwas schwierig entlang des Fahrradweges.
Wir beide waren mehr als glücklich als wir dann endlich unsere Jugendherberge (natürlich am anderen Ende der Stadt) erreichten!
Zum Abendessen haben wir noch gemeinsam Burritos gekocht - sehr lecker!
Das war es dann für das erste mit dem TA, aber keine sorge ich werde den wander weg schon noch fertig machen!Read more

With my parcel under the arm I walked through town to find a hostel. I couldn't believe how busy it was hundreds of people in the streets! The obvious first option of the YHA hostel was booked out... I ended up to stay at the X-Base hostel (not a very nice place to spent your money on).
Excited for fresh food I went in the supermarket and came out with rarely the basics! The market was stacked with people, it wasn't a small shop but it was full, I could hardly move around!
I want to be back in the wild!
Thanks to the friendly support parcel from back home with new boots and socks I will be able to keep going!
My day off ended up with doing not much at all, print the last set of maps for the TA and walking a bit around town to wear in my new boots.

Mit meinem Packet unterm Arm ging es durch die das Dorf auf der suche nach einem Hostel. Ich konnte gleich gar nicht glauben wie viele Leute sich hier durch die Straßen zwängen! Meine erste Anlaufstelle war das YHA Hostel, jedoch war dieses komplett ausgebucht! Ich hab dann noch einen Platz im X-Base Hostel gefunden (was das Geld ganz sicher nicht wert war).
Aber ich freute mich ja schon sehr auf endlich frisches essen, also ging es auf zum einkaufen. Zurück kam ich dann aber nur mit dem nötigsten. Da ich mich in dem vollgestopften Supermarkt kaum bewegen konnte! Nicht dass es ein kleiner Markt war, es waren nur hunderte Leute einkaufen.
Da will ich doch gleich wieder zurück in die Wildnis!
Aber dank eines freundlichen unterstützungs packet mit neuen Schuhen und Socken von Zuhause, kann die Reise weiter gehen!
An meinem freien Tag habe ich nicht wirklich viel zu Stande gebracht, außer essen, das nächste Kartenset ausdrucken lassen und ein wenig durch die Stadt laufen um die schuhe einzulaufen.
