    Fatima Intro

    October 22, 2024 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 75 °F

Just got to Fatima and took a stroll around town before going to find dinner…which, was the best Indian food I’ve had in a very long time. So good. It will be a full day of sightseeing and prayer services tomorrow at this unique and special place for followers of Catholicism. If you are in need of a statue of Mary, I got you. Literally dozens upon dozens of shops selling religious tchotchkes. Not trying to belittle what some revere, but it’s… a lot.Read more

A day of taking Fatima in and engaging in my own internal narratives of what do I believe about the testimonies of other people in their own journeys of faith? I want to be both respectful and have a sense of curiosity and openness, recognizing that each person’s faith journey is deeply personal and unique. I want to honor their experiences without imposing my own beliefs, while also remaining curious enough to ask meaningful questions that foster understanding. In doing so, I hope to balance empathy with inquiry, allowing space for both reverence and dialogue as we all seek truth in our own ways. A day of contemplation.Read more

Today was a couple walks along the coastal route of the Portuguese Camino. Overcast with a nice breeze was perfect to take in the salty air and witness the waves crash against the sandy beach.

Today was a series of short walks through a hilly village, along the Portugal shoreline, and across the Portugal/Spain border. I was hankering for pizza for dinner and the first place was closed, so I walked a little further to a second place (also closed), then decided I wasn’t going to give up and walked to a further third place that said I couldn’t eat there and it would be takeout only. So, because I didn’t want to walk 30 min home with a then cold pizza, I took it to the steps of a nearby shuttered church (along with a small bottle of local house wine from the pizza shop) and enjoyed a quiet solo dinner listening to the night sounds of this little town. It is off-season here, a Friday night, and it was almost silent.Read more

More rain today, but no rain tomorrow! Today was a 10 mile that was very nice. Not too challenging…just simply a good mix of city and suburb sidewalks/roadside spaces and rural trails. Leaders split up more than normal today to accommodate the needs of the group and I was responsible for navigating the group across a city from the coastal Camino route to the central Camino route. Anywho who really knows me knows that I have a terrible sense of direction, but thankfully for me, I used my sidekick Google to support me in the day’s oddysey . Pilgrim dinner of pureed mussels with cheese and a vodka red sauce (I think?!) and pork cheeks over a sweet potato mash. And of course red wine. Off to bed I go!Read more

Longer walk today of 12 miles but through some beautiful, creek/river walks. Was a perfect temperature out and no rain!

Once I got to the hotel, I set out to find a laundry place and washed and dried some clothes I need for the rest of the pilgrimage. The laundry place had a burger vending machine. Have you ever seen such a thing?! I didn’t want to spend the next few days miserable with E. coli, so I ventured on to vino tinto y pinchos/tapas.Read more

  • Padron

    October 29, 2024 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 54 °F

Our final long walk of the Camino, but it seemed to go by so quickly! Had lunch in Padron with local Padron peppers with salt, and a tapas dish of bread, pork loin, and cheese. Delish!

A short 10km walk this morning, then lunch and a bus-ride to a boat that showed us the maritime stations of the cross. Came back to Padron for a Eucharist service and dinner. Tomorrow we continue the journey to the Cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.Read more

    October 31, 2024 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 55 °F

A great walk into Santiago followed by celebrations with my fellow pilgrims from Colorado. I finished the day by going out on the town and seeing the nightlife (halloween night) of Santiago. With several universities here, it was a very young crowd. I stayed out way past my bedtime. Worth it.Read more
