• Kolmanskop Ghost Town

    April 20 in Namibia ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

.The wind got up overnight and the temperature plummeted. We had our normal quilt, then a double duvet and then a fleece blanket. To top it off we were also wearing our thermals and we weren’t hot. It was bitterly cold when we came out to make coffee at 5:30am.
We left the camp at 6:30am because yesterday the sat nav said it was a 2.5 hour drive. This morning it said it was just over an hour so we got to Kolmanskop stupid early but at 8am when they let us in we had the place to ourselves.
Kolmanskop was a diamond mining town in the early 1920’s that shot up but only lasted about 4 months until all the diamonds were mined. There were so many they were just laying in the sand.
When the town closed down it took years for anyone to be allowed inside it incase there were still diamonds left.
The town had a school, a huge hospital, a butchers and bakery and even an ice making factory. This has been on my explore list for a long time and I’m glad we ticked it off.
