• Duwisib Castle

    After unpacking we walked to the castle and had a look around. The castle was built in 1909 by an ex German soldier and they also brought 6000 hectares of land to start farming.
    They imported the breeding cows from England and the horses from Austria and the sheep from the northern cape.
    The horses were sought after by Namibian farmers and in 1914 the couple left Namibia to go to England to buy Colts but en route WW1 broke out and their ship was diverted to Rio De Janeiro. Here they were held in detention as Germans but the colonel managed to buy their way onto a neutral ship and they went to Germany.
    Back in Germany the ex colonel wanted to help the war effort and re- enlisted but 2 weeks later he was killed in the battle of the Somme.
