    Enfield Shakers

    September 3, 2016 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

Massive stone buildings in the middle of nowhere. Its the location of the 9th Shaker community, started late 1700s. Their craftsmanship and devotion to work is impressive. 20 bedrooms, 800 built-in drawers. 3rd picture is the community religious room, about the only place men and women saw each other... and sat separately. No iconography. The 5th picture is where the women would place the clean clothes after washing. The men picked them up and put them away. Chamber pots were stored in ground level lead lined cubby holes with a vent that pulled air up the chimney.Read more
