Pretty road, meandering and tree lined. Cold snap, quite chilly going up into the whites.

After I made this entry the road got more curvy and more cliffsidey. Very nice.

This restaurant is in Warren NH. I had to stop because I was dozing off. The place is empty. The waitress was friendly. She was originally from FL. When she had kids she moved out of Manchester. I asked why she moved way out here and she confirmed that jobs are very hard to come by. She works 4 or 5 to support the kids.

Rt 118 north of that last point was real nice.

Taking the western side of Rt 112 going in the direction east (towards the Kanc) has a fantastic view of the whites. There's a federal campground out there and a real picturesque pond abutting some steep hills.Read more

The leafing yesterday was nonexistent. The weatherman said near the border was at peak already. I checked the web to verify and found newengland.com (or something) has a nice "live observations" map. It said the whites are at mid peak. That's my favorite time. Well, I didn't find any mid peak yesterday.

Today I'm following Rt 3 above the whites and turning right to Dixville Notch. Conditions are great but cool.Read more

Not much in the way of nice foliage up here. One problem is the farther north I went the more cloudy it got.

Dixville Notch

The eponymous Notch is wicked. It's pretty much a donkey path between two peaks. It is completely cloudy up here and the wind is gusting through the notch. It feels very much like November.

There is a real fancy resort right at the base of the pass. Must be another turn of the century resort like the Mt Washington Omni.

I went down 16. It runs along a very pretty river. Which wasn't down hardly at all.Read more
