    Antiparos

    Antiparos is a small island in the southern Aegean, at the heart of the Cyclades, which is less than one nautical mile from Paros, the port to which it is connected with a local ferry. Saliagos island is the most ancient settlement in the Cyclades, and Despotiko, an uninhabited island in the southwest of Antiparos, is a place of great archaeological importance where we were before.

    The table below in my picture says "My brother, the reason we sing is not to distinguish ourselves from the rest but to connect each other". This is from Ritsos, a great Greek poet, a communist and an active member of the greek resistance in the WWII.    En savoir plus

    Paros

    I am rephrasing after my friend's Bojan comment who is 100% correct.

    "I am not writing anything about Paros cause I think it is overvalued". Just that..😁😂. Ok I am kidding..Here we are:

    High on the list of top Greek summer destinations, Paros Ιsland welcomes its visitors at the centre of the Cyclades group and invites them to explore its great beauty, the long beaches with crystal-clear waters and its Cycladic landscapes and get their money after mykonos and Santorini :).

    In the past, Paros was famous for its white marble; the so-called ‘Parian marble’ was highly sought-after for its top quality, for use in architecture and sculpture (particularly during the Classical Greek Period). Some of the masterpieces of ancient Greek sculpture were made with this pure white, translucent material. The statues of Hermes by Praxiteles, Venus de Milo (i.e. Aphrodite of Milos), Nike [Winged Victory] of Samothrace, Nike of Paionios, and the Caryatids, i.e. the famous daughters [korai] of the Erechtheion, Acropolis, Athens are some of the most popular specimens of such art.
    Some of the best known sculptors, painters and poets of ancient Greece come from Paros. The island has been an administrative and commercial hub in the Aegean Sea, and it has also been the apple of discord for many conquerors (Romans, Byzantines, Franks, Venetians and Ottomans), who left their mark on this place. It has known periods of great prosperity, as shown by the ruins in its archaeological sites and its considerable historical monuments, which you can visit across the island.

    Paros is also famous for Panagia Ekatontapiliani. It is a historic Byzantine church complex in Parikia town. The church complex contains a main chapel surrounded by two more chapels and a baptistery with a cruciform font. The origin of the church's name is obscure, as it does not have one hundred doors, or gates. One theory suggests that it is a corruption of the name "Katapoliani", i.e. "Lower Town church", as it lies by the sea in the lower part of the town of Parikia. The church dates to 326 😬. Crazy, right?

    Naousa

    Νaousa is located in the north of Paros and in my opinion this is the most beautiful village of the island. We arrived here after a pretty tough sailing route from Paroikia where the waves were 2 meters high splashing over the boat like crazy. Naouse has some of these iconic Cycladic streets (foto taken from google) and it is windy. The waves sometimes climb over the breakers and arrive on the pedestrians' streets. We won't stay long here. The reason to sail up to this point is to go to a very traditional Greek "Panigyri" which is a fest or festival in a boat yard. Let's see how this is :)En savoir plus

    As small as Schinousa

    Our trip continues with another two good friends and nautical Odyssey reached Schinoussa. It is a very small island in the Cyclades with Greek and international fan club. It is literally tiny (fewer than 400 inhabitants and just 9 square km), so small you’ll have difficulty finding it on a map. It is just south of Naxos and a stone’s throw from Iraklia, Donousa and the Koufonisia isles (fellow members of the so-called Small Cyclades). There are just three settlements – Mersini (the port), Hora (the main ‘town’, consisting of pretty much one street that you can walk down in 5 minutes) and Messaria, and you can just walk to the beach.En savoir plus

    Aristocratic Syros

    Heading north is always tricky cause you travel against the strong northerlies winds called Meltemi. After a 5 hours trip with the engine unfortunately, we arrived in Syros. Syros Island combines culture, entertainment and religion in the most harmonious way. It used to be one of the most significant islands in cycladic civilisation. Nowadays, the island is world-renowned for its rich cultural tradition with events that take place in Ermoupolis, the island’s capital, such as the International Classical Music Festival of Cyclades, ANIMASYROS International Animation Festival, Ermoupoleia Cultural Festival etc that offer a range of options for every visitor to experience.

    At this point, I think it is worth spending some time to talk about Syros Shipyard, aka Neorion. Neorion roots go back to a traditional shipyard on that island, known for the construction of ships and boats for use during the Greek revolution of the 1820s, as well as design and building of various types of ships for the new Greek kingdom in the decades that followed. The company was officially founded in 1861 to technically support the "Greek Steamship Company", initially employing, in addition to Greek technical staff and several mechanics from Western Europe.

    During the 1860s, in addition to ship building, it produced steam engines, boilers, pumps, and heavy cannons. A heavy steam engine of its own design and construction was exhibited at the International Exhibition in Paris in 1878. In 1893, the company produced its first metal steamship (the Athena).

    In 1898, the name "Neorion" (an Ancient Greek word indicating a port facility for ship repair and construction) was adopted.

    During the second half of the 19th century, it was one of the most important Greek heavy industries, at times second only to the Basileiades machine works in Piraeus. Other Neorion products included a variety of machinery (some of it exported), engine parts, and specialized metal constructions for the Greek industry.

    In 1997, Neorion acquired another shipyard, Elefsis Shipyards, while it diversified into new fields such as the construction of luxury mega-yachts and subcontracting work for aerospace companies. The company is currently organized as the Neorion Group. (Source and photo from Wikipedia)

    Μykonos..with mixed feelings

    I was always against this Mykonos thing.. it was too much and too fake but now that I visited I change my statement but not my opinion. Mykonos is a beautiful place with amazing beaches, and it is exactly this paradise that they have commercialized with no limits. Everything is so expensive that this place is not for the middle-class people independent of their nationality. This is a result of neoliberalism and neoliberal free markets which at the end kills the authenticity. It is sad but this is the reality. Greece is mykonos but mykonos is not Greece. I am not so sure if it is must to visit. I leave it on you..En savoir plus

    Back to base

    After 1500nm I am back to where I started this Nautical Odyssey! The feelings are mixed. Big satisfaction but sadness too that this journey gets closer to its end...However, together with Saint Eole, we are about to explore the Saronic Gulf islands as our last stop for this year so everyone stay tuned.     Poros

    Poros is a small island in Greece in the heart of the Saronic Gulf. Having Aegina and Agistri above it, Hydra and Spetses below it, and the coasts of the Peloponnese in arm's reach, its location is extremely convenient. Thanks to its proximity to Athens, it is a favorite destination for short trips from Athens among Greeks and tourists alike! Great port for sailboats and many bays well protected from all winds.     Hydra

    The weather got worse and started raining. We started from Poros this morning but there was no wind so we motored to our next destination..Hydra. A rich naval tradition and a cosmopolitan island ambience are the defining characteristics of Hydra - a popular island in the Argosaronic gulf. This was the favourite destination and place of residence of painter Nikos Hatzikyriakos-Ghika, Leonard Cohen, and Henry Miller. It is also the birthplace of painter Panagiotis Tetsis, and of many other famous artists, writers etc. The island’s great beauty was appreciated also by celebrities such as Maria Callas, Pablo Picasso, and Sophia Loren.

    Apart from being a popular sailing destination, Hydra is also very interesting from an architectural point of view, as a number of luxury residences, built by Italian craftsmen, are scattered on the island. The grand houses of the local fighters for the Greek War of Independence (1821) are now museums which offer their visitors an insight into that particular period in Greek history. If you are interested in religious monuments, there are some 300 churches and 6 monasteries you can visit on the island.    En savoir plus

    Known as Isola di Spezie under Venetian rule and Pityoussa (pine-clad) in ancient times, Spetses, at just 54 nautical miles from Athens, is a picturesque, car-free island with a unique architecture, naval history and culture. The island flourished during the early 18th century, developing into a significant naval power, dominating the major shipping routes of the Mediterranean. Today, mainly driven by the greek ship owners does not allow many touristic activities.En savoir plus

    Kyparissi

    Κyparissi a small village along the north east coast of Laconia, Greece is very unique. The mountains reaching 1000meters are like a wall protecting the village from any foreigner conqueror but still there are patches of land for people to farm and be able to be self-sustaining. In recent years it has become famous as a rock climbing destination with stunning views for those who up on the rocks. As a sailing destination is also nice and important and a stopover before reaching Monemvasia.

    Ermioni

    We had a nice sailing today from Leonidio to Ermioni. 7 knots speed with 10knots wind speed..so we took the max we could. Ermioni is a small seaside town on the eastern coasts of Peloponnese, in the region of Argolis. Constructed on the hill slopes around a beautiful port, this town has revived over the last decades as many Athenians have holiday homes there. The traditional architecture and the natural beauty of Ermioni Greece attract many families looking for peaceful vacations. The small port is connected by ferry to Piraeus and the islands of Hydra and Spetses. The port promenade is a relaxing place to stroll around and enjoy a meal during your Ermioni holidays.

    Methana - Vathy

    Τoday we had a new visitor in Saint Eole, Chris. We started in the morning from Poros and with a bit of sails and a bit of engine we reached Vathy in Methana. Very nice route in Saronic Gulf. The peninsula of Methana with its two steep volcanic slopes is actually a volcano that emerged from the sea! The establishment of the spa complex in 1870 made it a popular spa town attracting mainly senior citizens from many European countries.

    The Baths of Pausanias, one of the peninsula’s hot springs and the ancient historian Pausanias to the ancient city of Méthana are pretty special. In the village of Paleókastro stand the remains of the classical walls and gates of an acropolis, the rest of which fell into the sea due to a volcanic eruption.

    The peninsula boasts approximately 32 volcanoes. Climbing to the largest crater is a truly challenging experience. Start from Kameni Hora and follow the path on a 25-minute climb to the lip of the volcano. Step on now solid red lava flows and take in views of a different world of savage black, red and green crags and sharp abysses…    En savoir plus

    Aigina

    From Agistri, we came to Aegina main village. The island of Aegina is one of the most popular tourist destinations as it is the closest island to Athens (only 16.5 nautical miles from the port of Piraeus).

    From 1827 until 1829 Aegina town was the temporary capital of the newly founded Greek state. It was during that period when Governor Ioannis Kapodistrias had impressive neoclassical mansions built to house his headquarters, which are well worth a visit. Really nice place with many archeological sites and many Greek traditional churches.    En savoir plus

    The end is just the beginning

    The feelings are very mixed...on one hand it is sad to see her out of the water, resting motionless like having no soul...and on the other hand the satisfaction after 2000NM is more than great! We enjoyed every single mile, port, bay, anchorage, village.. I cannot recall any place that I said I want to leave now..I think this says alot. Let's see what's the future of Saint Eole is, but before that I would like to thank all of you who helped me accomplish this Odyssey and specifically dad, Gianmarco, Christos and Bojan!En savoir plus
