  • One more tough passage was completed

After 5 hours of heavy waves (almost 3 meters high) and strong winds we arrived in Astypalaia. Beautiful island and although it belongs to Dodecanese it has a clear cycladic style!

  • So authentic!

Tilos is one of the small Dodecanese Islands, located between Rhodes and Kos. The landscape includes high mountains, fertile seaside plains, steep rocky shores as well as long sandy beaches. Tilos Island provides habitat for rare bird species such as the Bonelli’s eagle, the Eleonora’s falcon, the long-legged buzzard, the European shag, the European bee-eater, herons, etc, and it has some four hundred types of flowers and herbs. It is the first green island, energy-wise, and a large nature reserve protected by international treaties.

The last elephants of Europe lived here: the dwarf elephants appeared on the island 45,000 years ago and disappeared about 4,000 years ago. In antiquity, Tilos was popular for its herbs, and it prospered during the Classical period, which was also the time when Irinna, a famous ancient Greek female poet lived. It is today a quiet island of picturesque villages and amazing beaches where you can have a relaxing holiday. It is a destination where the notion of sustainability is put to practice.

We really liked it. So small, so cute so authentic!

  • The Holy Monastery of Panormitis in Symi

The Holy Monastery of Archangel Michael Panormitis in Simi Dodecanese: The village of Panormitis, to the southwest of the main town, hosts the main monastery of Simi island, a monastery dedicated to the Archangel Michael. The exact construction date is unknown but, according to an old manuscript, it existed in the 15th century. It is said that this monastery was built on the ruins of an ancient temple, but this has not been proved.

The Monastery of Panormitis is tied with the Christian faith of the Symiot people. The interior is covered with wall paintings from the Byzantine period, made by the native hagiographers Nikitas and Michaelos Karakostidis. The image of the Archangel Michael is depicted in one of the frescoes. There are also nice wooden carved icons, most of which are gifts from the pilgrims.

The monastery also includes two museums in its yard. The first museum hosts silver icons, pontificals, Russian epitaphs, ecclesiastical vessels, and various religious items. The other museum displays an exhibition of folk culture, including items relevant to fishing, agriculture and shepherding. The Monastery of Archangel Michael also hosts a library with Byzantine manuscripts of religious, historical and philosophical content.

Some books date from the 16th and the 18th century. Furthermore, a gallery includes paintings of the monastery and its surrounding landscape. The Monastery of Archangel Michael in Panormitis village celebrates on November 8th and a religious festival is held every year with a lot of pilgrims coming to the island.

  • Symi chora

While approaching the port of Symi, one has the overwhelming feeling of entering a perfectly painted image of a scenic traditional village. As a rule, people cannot take their eyes off the spectacular sight. A galore of two and three-storey traditional stone houses, painted in all colours but mostly in indigo, ochre and terracotta, with red tiled roofs and cute little balconies with railings set up the peculiarity of the island.

I don't really know guys but I am thinking to put Symi chora on the top 3 islands for a sailboat. As you enter the Port as the village unfolds the feeling is simply amazing!

  • A volcanic island!

Τoday we had to use the engine from Symi to Nysiros since we were going exactly against the wind but after 5hours we did it and arrived in this unique island.

Nisyros is one of the most beautiful and lesser known Aegean islands, part of the Dodecanese island group, next to Kos and Tilos. The island’s obsidian trade is what made its economy thrive in antiquity. The jem was extracted by locals from the nearby Gyali Island where a pumice mining factory is still in operation today.

According to Greek mythology, Nisyros was created during the war between Gods and Giants. Poseidon chased the Giant Polyvotis down to Kos, cut a part of it and threw it to his enemy, sinking him forever in the bottom of the Aegean Sea. The legendary rock referred to in the Myth is supposed to be the island of Nisyros. It is said that when the volcano used to erupt it was the defeated Giant’s angry breath.

Nisyros volcano is the youngest one in Greece. The island has been inhabited since prehistoric times and is home to a large number of cultural monuments. It truly is ideal for anyone searching for an off the beaten track destination offering natural and cultural sights to explore.

Once again so authentic and so nice!

  • No cars & turquoise waters

West of popular Rhodes Island lies a chain of islets, the biggest of them being Chalki. Chalki is an island with a low profile and an ancient history. It’s been inhabited since the prehistoric times and it got its name from the copper mines (Chalkos is Greek for copper) that were in use on the island in antiquity. The buildings bear the signs of prosperity the island knew during the second half of the 19th c., as trade growth and the sponge harvesting business brought wealth to the locals. After 1912, the Italians possessed the Dodecanese group of islands (Chalki included) until 1948 when they became part of the Greek State.

Today Chalki is for those who seek relaxed vacations, without cars, turquoise waters in front of the houses and good food.

  • Saint Eole in Rhodes

We did it! After 3 months of sailing we arrived in Rhodes which is one of the most south east islands of Greece. (Still Kastelorizo must be mentioned which the most south eastern island of Greece and EU). Anyways, few words about Rhodes.

This island has a long and impressive history; it’s a place where the strong mediaeval aspect blends with the traditional Greek one. It is also an island with great natural beauty: the lovely beaches face the pine woods on the mountainsides; the mountain villages overlook the seaside towns; and the archaeological sites, the mediaeval monuments and the cosmopolitan resorts arranged in the traditional style all conspire to make the popularity of this destination so hard to resist, even to a demanding traveller.
It flourished during the 4th c. BC; this is when the famous Colossus of Rhodes, a gigantic statue sculpted by Charis from Lindos, Rhodes, who was a student of Lysippos, a master sculptor at the time. The history of this island is a rich one, as each conqueror left their strong mark on it. Really nice being in this place!

  • One more beautiful sunset!

Today we anchored in nissos Gyali. Super small place without residents but blue, green and turquoise waters all together. In addition there is something very special in these waters.. small bubbles are coming out on the surface from the sea-bed..why? Because nissos Gyali is next to Nisyros, the volcano we have visited few days ago. Enjoy nature's beauty!

  • Anafi island & full of steep cliffs

After 6 hours of a dynamic sailing we arrived in Anafi. So officially we are in Cyclades islands! Bathed in the sunshine of the Aegean and showered with the salt of the sea, lonely in its simplicity, Anafi remains an island untouched by the rhythms of modern society. Its visitors, after getting a taste of the unique landscapes and the inhabitants’ hospitality that will be generously offered, will love it permanently and consistently.

The island is slowly taking its place in the tourist scene. Today the island is able to provide all the necessary services to a traveller who does not visit Anafi like a common tourist, but bears all the characteristics of an old excursionist a virgin and unexplored place, who constantly discovers it by inspecting it from land and sea.

  • The famous Santorini!

What should I write about Santorini?! Everyone knows this unique and marvelous volcanic island in the heart of Aegean Sea...unfortunately we had to motor from Anafi to here due to windless conditions but as we entered the infamous caldera with S/V Saint Eole, the landscape was stunning! My friend Charis arranged a mooring buoy just under Oia. Ooohh, I don't think I will ever have a better "apparentment" location than this spot that I am now with Saint Eole...

  • Ios - Homer's homeland

Today, we half sailed and half motored from Santorini to Ios. The island of Ios, or Nios as locals call it, is a charming Cycladic island and renowned among the young for its vivid nightlife. It is located between Santorini, Paros and Naxos islands and offers a plethora of lovely bays and beaches.
The sights you shouldn’t miss out on are the lighthouse at the port entrance as well as the open air theatre “Odysseas Elytis”, where lots of events take place during summer.
According to ancient tradition, Ios was Homer’s burial land as well as his mother’s homeland.

  • Polyaigos - uninhabited island

Today we sailed from Milos to Polyaigos. In very simple words it is an exotic paradise. The colours, the feeling it offers and the images that will stay in your memory forever cannot be easily described in words! One dip in the turquoise waters with the seabed of the bright white sand and you will feel as if you were reborn. This wondrous microcosm is between Milos and Kimolos and surprisingly it is the largest uninhabited island of the Aegean Sea. It is big..with many caves and goats walking around freely. Amazing!

  • Aphrodite of Milos

Found in the southwest part of the Cyclades, this island has a handful of singular natural landscapes contributed by volcanic activity; rock formations, curious soil colours and numerous beaches. Besides having countless unique sights to see around the island, it also is the homeland of the renowned marble statue of Venus of Milo seen today in the Louvre Museum.

Milos’ volcanic past is reflected on the large number of hot springs, caves and geological formations found around the island such as Kanavas, Alykis, Provatas, Pikropigis springs, Papafragas and Sikia Caves, and Kleftiko Cove. The island also has numerous significant archaeological sites such as the early christian catacombs, the Bronze Age settlement of Phylakopi, and interesting museums namely the Mining Museum showcasing Milos’ 11.000 years old mineral history.

In my opinion the most exiting island in Cyclades but there are more to come ;)

The trip from Kimolos to sifnos was short but interesting. We had 15knots of wind and full sails open. Other boats were also crossing this passage and this brings with sailors' companion. • Despotiko and temple of Apollo

Using the special south west wind in Aegean Sea, which is not a common wind and is a result of the strong Mistral hitting south France these days, we reached Despotiko. Despotikó (Greek: Δεσποτικό), anciently, Prepesinthus or Prepesinthos (Ancient Greek: Πρεπέσινθος) is a small, uninhabited Greek island in the Cyclades. It is situated west of the island of Antiparos, and east of the smaller island of Strongyli. At its north east side, a temple of Apollo (Picture from wikipedia) was built and today, one can see its ruins. Imagine the scenery in the ancient times...Amazing!
