Woohooo today is Christmas Eve... However none of us is in a christmas mood, despite the fact that we brought some christmas hats with us :) However I opened up my little christmas gift from my family 🙏.

Today we also explored different places and temples located in the El Mirador National Park. This was very facinating to see the artefacts and sculptures which have been uncovered, knowing that they were build over 2000 years ago.

  • Semuc Champey

    December 28, 2021 in Guatemala ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

Of to a great day exploring Semuc Champey. It was the indigenous Maya Q'eqchi communities that named this magical place. “Semuc Champey,” which means “the river that hides in the mountain.” It consists of a natural 300 m limestone bridge, under which the Cahabón River passes.

We got picked up by a pickup truck that :-) where we spent 45 minutes on the back shaking around and enjoying the view and ride.

When we arrived at the national park we expected to see just the water pools. However we got surprised by doing a cave tour with candles. And after that we hiked up to the lookout before we went into the crystal clear water pools.

  • New Years Eve @ Lake Atitlan

    January 1, 2022 in Guatemala ⋅ 🌙 11 °C

Simon, the guy who always has the lonely planet at hand said: the people here in Guatemala don't do fireworks, they do parades. We were a bit sad about it but ok we wouldn’t have fireworks in Germany anyways… in the afternoon we heard an incredibly loud explosion in the sky and we knew that it is going to be interesting here. Especially when we saw our neighbour firing up a huge ball with a firework mortar (Mörser).

We made some homemade pizza and even got the traditional tamales from our Airbnb host who is also a professionell chef 👨‍🍳. Tamales are made of masa, a dough made from nixtamalized corn, which is steamed in banana leaf.

At around 23:30 the little - so far pretty quiet town - went absolutely nuts 🤩🧨🎆

  • Acatenango Hike #1

    January 5, 2022 in Guatemala ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

Today is the big day. We are going to hike the Volcan de Acatenango (3976m) which is the calm neighbor of the hyperactive Volcan de Fuego 🌋

We reached the basecamp after five hours of hiking and climbing up 1500 meters in altitude. At that time we have already seen several hikups of El Fuego and even one big explosion where we felt a strong shock wave.

After a short one hour break we continued the hike to get closer to El Fuego 🤩 it was an incredible feeling standing just 200-300. eters away from an active vulcano feeling and hearing the eruptions every 20 minutes.
