After we have got luckily a hitch from Kaitaia by a local which saw us walking out of our hostel with our big backpacks we started into the first of three forests between us and Kerikeri. Without this ride we would have walked the first two hours of the day on hard asphalt...

Doesn't mean that the day should any easier. The stage of today way allocated with 9 1/2 hours. Crossing the first forest from east to west. The ascent was steep, but at least the trail has been maintained and well marked, which shouldn't be the case for the rest of our way...Read more

Reaching ridge of the mountain which is leading towards the summit we discovered quiet soon that a steep hill won't be the only challenging thing we gonna encounter on this trail. But so far our mood was still great! :)Read more

Herekino forest summit

You might think that on the ridge and around the summit area there can't be much water to make your trail muddy. But that would have been a wrong guess...

Missing at this point already quiet deeply proper hiking boots, which we left in germany, our walking shoes got muddier and muddier, including the ends of the trousers and socks.

My ankles started to hurt more and more while balancing over roots and rocks through the mud pitches which made the trail very strenuous and slow walking for us.Read more

Mini bauernhof campingplatz

Ich liebe es hier. Fühlt sich einfach und natürlich an. Einfache Dusche (beheizt durch Gasflasche) in mini Hütte. Ebenfalls Küche in andere Hütte. Kühe Hühner Enten und Garten mit Gemüse vorhanden.

Mini farm campground. I love here! Its feel like easy and nature. Easy showers (get hot water because of gas bottle) in mini hut. Kitchen in another hut. Cows (chicken but not meat) duck and garden with vegetables was here.Read more
