Loch Eriboll

📍 Loch Eriboll – The Wild and Endless Sea Loch

Rolling down the NC500, Vanilla and I pulled up alongside Loch Eriboll, a place that feels like Scotland showing off without even trying. This long, fjord-like stretch of water cuts deep into the land, surrounded by rugged hills and scattered crofts, with the road hugging its edge in sweeping bends. It’s not one of those quick photo-stop lochs – it’s a slow burner, stretching on and on until you start wondering if it’ll ever end.

There’s history in the air here too. During WWII, German U-boats surrendered right in this loch, and you can almost picture the dark silhouettes lurking beneath the surface. Today it’s calm, reflective, and almost eerily quiet – apart from the occasional sheep wandering into the road to remind you you’re still in the Highlands.

The views change every minute: one side craggy and brooding, the other softer with green slopes tumbling into the water. The light dances across the loch, one moment sparkling silver, the next moody and dark. It’s the kind of place that makes you pull over just to breathe it in, camera ready, but mostly just to stand still.
