🚐 Gruinard Beach — Reflections on Sand and Survival

Gruinard Beach shimmered in the late light, golden sands stretching into turquoise waves, with the shadow of Anthrax Island offshore. It’s one of those places that feels serene yet carries the weight of history.

While looking out across the bay, I struck up a conversation with a man who pulled up in his own Indium Grey short-wheelbase VW Transporter. He told me he’d been serving in the Army back in 1989 — and that he was a survivor of the Kegworth Air Crash.

He shared some of the struggles he’s faced since then, but also spoke warmly about the therapy he finds in the Scottish Highlands. This was his fourth NC500 journey, and it was clear the route gives him a sense of peace and perspective that can’t be found anywhere else.
