Today Vanilla and I rolled into the beautiful old city of Deventer, perched on the banks of the River IJssel. It’s one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands, packed with medieval streets, historic buildings, cosy cafés, and enough bars to satisfy even the most dedicated NIX-style European wanderer.
As an Aston Villa supporter, there was an unexpected football connection too. Deventer is home to Go Ahead Eagles, who famously stunned Aston Villa with a 2–1 victory in a Europa League match at their compact and atmospheric stadium, De Adelaarshorst. It was one of those classic European nights where football reminds you that history and reputation count for nothing once the whistle blows. (Go Ahead Eagles)
Thankfully, my Villa memories in the Netherlands are still dominated by something rather more enjoyable: Aston Villa becoming European Champions in 1982 when they defeated Bayern Munich 1–0 in Rotterdam. For a Villa fan wandering Dutch soil, that achievement still feels special all these years later. (Wikipedia)
Deventer itself has been a delightful surprise. Beautiful squares, riverside views, fantastic cycling infrastructure, and a relaxed atmosphere that makes you want to stay longer than planned. The Dutch seem to have mastered the art of making life look easy.
Another day, another stop on the European Drift. Another reminder that the best discoveries are often the places you knew almost nothing about before you arrived.
