🇧🇪 FIND PENGUINS | DE PANNE – WHERE HISTORY TOUCHED THE SAND

Sometimes the penguins aren’t birds at all.

Today I found myself standing on the vast beach at De Panne, Belgium. At first glance it’s simply a beautiful stretch of golden sand, rolling dunes and the endless grey-blue waters of the North Sea. Families stroll along the promenade, cyclists glide past, and the atmosphere is calm and relaxed.

But beneath that tranquillity lies one of the most significant coastlines in modern history.

Just a few miles along this shoreline lies Dunkirk. In May 1940, as German forces swept across Europe, hundreds of thousands of Allied troops became trapped against the sea. With defeat appearing inevitable, an extraordinary rescue mission began.

From these beaches, and others just along this coast, over 338,000 British, French and Belgian soldiers were evacuated back to Britain during Operation Dynamo.

Standing here today, it is difficult to imagine the scenes of eighty-six years ago. The peaceful sea would have been filled with naval vessels, fishing boats, ferries and little civilian craft. The skies would have echoed with the sound of aircraft and artillery. Men waited on the sand, hoping for rescue and wondering if they would ever see home again.

De Panne itself played an important role during those desperate days. Allied commanders used the town as a communications centre, helping coordinate one of the most remarkable military evacuations in history.

As I walked across the beach this morning, camera in hand, I couldn’t help but reflect on the contrast. The same sand that now welcomes holidaymakers once witnessed fear, courage, sacrifice and hope on an unimaginable scale.

That is one of the joys of travelling alone.

You set out looking for scenery and photographs, and sometimes you find stories instead.

Today, in De Panne, I didn’t find penguins.
