    Dubrovnik

    Today in Dubrovnik I accidentally discovered the true difference between travelling… and understanding where you are.

    The bus into town cost me €2.50.

    It was the full international “bus wanker” experience:
    • cruise ship chaos
    • backpacks in ribs
    • people arguing over tickets
    • sunburnt tourists everywhere
    • somebody loudly explaining Game of Thrones to their wife like they personally directed it šŸ˜‚

    The Uber home cost me €12.

    Driver turned out to be Bosnian. He was 18 during the Yugoslav Wars.

    In 25 minutes I learned more from that man than I ever could from museums or documentaries. He showed me the scars where he nearly lost an eye and his knee. Just casually. No drama. Just facts.

    One minute you’re photographing medieval walls and beautiful Adriatic sunsets… next minute you realise people here were fighting for survival within living memory.

    And suddenly the whole place feels different.

    The bus took me to Dubrovnik.

    šŸ‡­šŸ‡·šŸ– DISCOVERING CEVAPI IN CROATIA šŸ–šŸ‡­šŸ‡·

    Today I finally tried cevapi properly.

    Basically imagine if sausages and kebabs had a Balkan baby and decided to become one of the greatest beer foods ever invented. šŸ˜‚

    Little grilled minced meat sausages served in warm flatbread with chopped onions and sauce. Simple food done properly — smoky, juicy, slightly greasy, and absolutely perfect after a long wander around the Adriatic coast.

    You can tell this part of the world takes food seriously. No fancy nonsense. Just proper honest cooking that’s been done the same way for generations.

    Vanilla approved. šŸššŸŗ

    šŸš Adriatic Drift North — Dubrovnik to Krvavica

    Today’s more about taking it easy and actually enjoying the Croatian coastline instead of hammering out massive driving days. After a few longer stretches behind the wheel, the plan is pretty chilled: leave Dubrovnik, cruise north along the Adriatic, quickly pass through Bosnia & Herzegovina at Neum, then settle into a relaxed campsite somewhere around the Makarska Riviera for the afternoon and evening.

    Approximate plan for the day:

    šŸ•¤ 9:30am — Leave Dubrovnik area
    One last look at the Adriatic around Dubrovnik before heading north. The roads here are unreal in the morning — the sea’s sparkling, the mountains are lighting up, and everything just feels calm before the day gets going.

    šŸ‡§šŸ‡¦ Around 10:30am — Neum, Bosnia & Herzegovina
    Approx. 70km / 1 hour

    The route briefly cuts through the tiny Bosnian coastline at Neum — one of the weirdest little border crossings in Europe. Bosnia & Herzegovina only has around 20km of coastline, so you end up leaving Croatia, entering Bosnia for a quick coastal stretch, then crossing straight back into Croatia again.

    šŸŒ Adding another country to the trip

    The scenery’s gorgeous too — steep hills, bright blue water, and little coastal buildings packed into the narrow bay.

    šŸ‡­šŸ‡· Late morning to early afternoon — Adriatic Coastal Road
    Approx. 230km / 4 hours with stops

    From Neum the road heads north along one of the best coastal drives in Europe. This is exactly the kind of route that makes campervan road trips so addictive.

    Along the way:
    • dramatic mountain views
    • tiny fishing villages
    • endless island scenery
    • little harbours and marinas
    • winding cliffside roads above the Adriatic

    No motorways today. Just proper slow coastal cruising.

    šŸ•ļø Around 2:00pm — Camping Krvavica
    Near Makarska, Croatia

    Tonight’s stop should be Camping Krvavica — a smaller laid-back campsite tucked into the Makarska Riviera beneath the massive Biokovo mountains.

    Today’s plan is intentionally simple:
    šŸš Park up early
    šŸŒŠ Walk down to the sea
    šŸŗ Grab a drink at a beach bar
    šŸ“ø Catch sunset photos
    šŸŽ¶ Sit outside Vanilla with music on and completely switch off

    Honestly, those usually end up being the best days of the trip.

    Total distance for today:
    šŸ“ Roughly 300km
    šŸ•“ Around 5–6 hours including stops and border crossings

    No rushing. No strict plans. Just another beautiful day drifting north through the Balkans in Vanilla

    Bosnia Border Crossing

    šŸššŸ‡§šŸ‡¦ BORDER RUN INTO BOSNIA šŸ‡§šŸ‡¦šŸš

    Today’s drive brought one of those proper overland moments at the Neum border crossing. One minute I was cruising along the Croatian coast, the next I was pulling into passport control behind a few coaches and a police vehicle with the Adriatic glittering away beside the road.

    The crossing itself was calm and surprisingly straightforward. Engines idling, passports ready, everyone waiting their turn in that slow-moving border queue atmosphere that somehow always makes a trip feel more adventurous. A quick check from the officials and then Vanilla was officially rolling into Bosnia & Herzegovina. šŸŒ

    It’s only a small stretch of coastline, but it completely changes the feel of the drive. Different signs, different currency, different vibe… mountains rising behind the town while the sea sits quietly below the road.

    Another border crossed. Another country added to the map. And another little “how on earth did I end up here?” moment for the European Drift tour. šŸš

    Fuel stop completed today in Neum — Bosnia & Herzegovina’s little stretch of Adriatic coastline and honestly one of the most unexpected places of the whole trip so far.

    The fuel station looked wonderfully old-school and came complete with a very direct warning:

    “FOREIGN CURRENCY NOT ACCEPTED.”

    No messing about here. šŸ˜…

    Neum itself is fascinating — one minute you’re cruising the Croatian coast, then suddenly you’re in Bosnia beside the Adriatic with different flags, different currency, different atmosphere and dramatic mountains dropping into the sea.

    Bosnia and Herzegovina only has about 20km of coastline… and today I found it. šŸ‡§šŸ‡¦šŸŒŠ

    Crossed briefly into the little seaside town of Neum — Bosnia’s tiny window onto the Adriatic. It’s one of those places that feels slightly surreal because you suddenly realise you’re looking at Bosnia… with beaches, boats and beach bars. šŸ˜„

    Had a wander along the waterfront, watched the little boats bobbing about, and ticked another country off the list from the comfort of Vanilla. šŸš

    There’s something quite brilliant about this trip. One minute I’m climbing mountain roads, the next I’m parked beside the Adriatic Sea in a country most people don’t even realise has a coastline.

    Europe really is wild when you do it properly by road.

    Fresh Orange Juice

    Driving through Croatia, one of the best little discoveries has been the roadside fresh fruit and juice stalls. šŸŠšŸššŸ‡­šŸ‡·

    Not flashy tourist places — just small family setups at the side of the road with piles of oranges, peaches, cherries and homemade bottles of fresh orange juice sitting in cool boxes under parasols. The sort of places you spot at the last second and immediately think, “Yep… I’m stopping there.”

    The fresh orange juice was unbelievable too. Properly fresh. None of that supermarket concentrate nonsense. Just cold, sharp, sweet sunshine in a bottle after hours on hot coastal roads. Some stalls had homemade lemonade, honey, figs and local olive oil as well.

    It’s one of those simple travel moments that somehow becomes part of the whole adventure — parked up in Vanilla with the Adriatic nearby, sipping fresh juice bought from a roadside shack while old Croatian radio music crackles in the background.
