    Departure

    May 7, 2022 in the Netherlands ⋅ 🌧 10 °C

And so our Camino starts. We said our goodbyes to our home and took our first steps on our Camino. Ready to board our first train. It's an exciting day. We've been waiting for this moment for years and are recollecting memories from Sinterklaas 2019 when we had a lot of "gifts" that come in handy on this trip.
    Buen camino!

  • Thalys

    May 7, 2022 in Belgium ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

With a delay of several hours we are now passing through Belgium on the Thalys train. Because of some problems on the railway we had a detour with a bus from Meppel to Zwolle, causing us to get delayed one hour at Schiphol. Rebooking tickets cost more time, resulting in a 2 hour delay on Thalys. And that will finally result in a four hour delay when we arrive at our hotel in Spain later.. but all is well. Spirits are good and we just make the most of our train trip.
Next post probably somewhere in France.

    May 7, 2022 in France ⋅ 🌙 14 °C

Buenos noches, mañana un día largo.

  • Doce tribus

    May 8, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

After a pretty intense day we arrived at our destination for the day. A casa of a couple in their 60s who enjoy the visits of all the people hiking El Camino.
Today was beautiful but not for the weak. We climbed up to about 570m walked over a ridge came down to sea level to cross a canal and back up 400m. But views were spectacular. I'll post some of that in separate posts.
We will stay here for the night and continue to San Sebastián tomorrow which is 2k away, where we will breakfast probably.

  • After 49km of walking...

    May 9, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

After 2 days and 49 kilometres on our route this is what I'm feeling:
    - feet: nothing, perfect condition, thank God.
    - legs: only a little bit of soreness at the joints of my hip, but nothing to worry about.
    - shoulders: this is where it hurts more, 8-9 kilograms (that's including water) is not something I'm used to carry up and down the mountains over long periods of time. It's all muscular so hopefully it will go away soon.
    - but the worst is completely unrelated to the walking. I left Holland with a sore throat and by now it's worse and makes talking difficult. Plus I'm by now all congested, coughing and the whole works..
So in other words you never know what the Camino brings.

  • Amalfi coast?

    May 10, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

Every step is spectacular. It's a blessing that we have the opportunity to walk here.
But it also comes with its challenges.. what do you do when every hostel, boarding house or hotel is full? You just continue to the next place in the hope you are lucky there.Read more

  • At the monastery

    May 11, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Today we passed our first 100km on this camino and sure it is exactly like we had imagined it, namely it's impossible to imagine in advance what will come on your path. New friends, connection with friends of friends, atmosphere among our fellow pilgrims, all it's just hard to describe.
This afternoon we arrived at a monastery where we had the locally brewed beer, we ate dinner in one of the sleeping rooms and were served by a father.
And on our way here we passed the town named after Simon Bolivar who had lived here.

  • Picasso's Guernica

    May 12, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

We just passed the town of Guernica.
Picasso’s painting is based on the events that took place here on April 27, 1937, when Hitler’s German air force, acting in support of Franco, bombed this village of Guernica that had no strategic value. It was history’s first aerial saturation bombing of a civilian population. It was a cold-blooded training mission designed to test a new bombing tactic to intimidate and terrorize the resistance. For over three hours, twenty five bombers dropped 100,000 pounds of explosive and incendiary bombs on the village, reducing it to rubble. Twenty more fighter planes strafed and killed defenseless civilians trying to flee. The devastation was appalling: fires burned for three days, and seventy percent of the city was destroyed. A third of the population, 1600 civilians, were wounded or killed.
With everything happening in Ukraine, Picasso's painting is more than ever relevant today. The original painting you can find in Madrid.

  • Only 689km left

    May 14, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

Today was a relaxed day. 30km but not that many steep hills. We enjoyed walking with our friends Maria and Anthony that we have met along the way. And according to the sign there is only 689km left to get to Santiago de Compostela.
    La vida es bella.

  • San Isidro in Cerdigo

    May 15, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Today was the celebration day of San Isidro and we just had to stumble upon. It started when we saw a small procession near a church that we took some pictures off. Then when we decided to buy something to drink and before we knew it we were offered more drinks, then the food came in various forms and more drinks. Then the dance performance started and at some point we had to join them as well. 3 hours later we said our goodbyes and continued on our Camino. Another marvelous experience.Read more

  • Menu del día

    May 16, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

One of the great things in Spain is El menu del día. It's in general a menu that consists of an entree, a main course, a desert and of course a bottle of wine and water. Sometimes even the coffee is included and the price €12-14. It's a steal and a great way to have a rest and get some energy for the next walk of the day.Read more
