Oh, what a glorious day to be walking here! The sun was shining, with no wind and beautiful views! Today was also a low km day and ver little elevation (practically a rest day!)
Team Australia left early as they're walking the whole trail in 8 days (cah-razy... lol).
This is probably the most wooded section of the trail. First is Whitcomb Wood - mainly beech, ash, oak, whitebeam, wych elm, and alder.
Next we encountered the witch house then Coopers Hill - famed for an annual cheese rolling event (on a 33% grass slope, thought to have started 2000 years ago as a way to claim the best grazing rights, but currently is about rolling down this hill after an 8 pound round of Double Gloucester cheese) and forms part of a large iron age encampment dating from 500 BC.
Then, on to Buckholt Wood, just an overwhelming beautiful canopy of ancient beech trees and over 780 species of wild fungi! (There will be a separate post devoted to fungi of the Costwolds later, lol, 🍄) Over Beacons Hill and into the charming little town of Painwick! Our home for the night, and we have time to explore! ❤️🇬🇧🥾
