  • Day two Panama City

    November 21, 2021 in Panama ⋅ 🌧 28 °C

We hired a driver to give us a tour of Panama City. Michael is amazed at how much the city has grown in the 7 years since he’s been here.
Sun ands cloud today, but we missed the rain
    - Went by Old Panama - the first Spanish settlement in Panama that was destroyed by the privateer, Captain Morgan in 1671
    - Drove through the toney Punta Pacifica neighborhood where the hospital Michael previously did consulting work
    - Drove out the lovely Causeway Amador - created with the dredgings from building the canal - now a pedestrian walkway
    - Had lunch at a fish market
    - Watched canal’s Miraflores Lock open to let a container ship pass through

  • Casco Viejo

    November 22, 2021 in Panama ⋅ 🌧 29 °C

Today was spent exploring the old Spanish town Casco Viejo.
    - We had the pleasure of meeting up with fellow Facebook Expats Gazelle and Eric for lunch.
    - In the afternoon we did a unique, Two Faces of Casco Viejo tour, lead by a terrific local guide, Victor. To put it lightly, we visited the non-tourist side of the neighborhood. Victor did a great job introducing us to a neighborhood police station that does educational and sports programs every weekend local children. We were invited to play dominoes with some senior gentlemen and had a beer at a very local cantina. Victor made us feel at ease for this remarkable tour. I’m still processing the abject poverty I observed but a community nevertheless. . .
-back to the tourist area, we enjoyed flights of craft rum (yum!) and beers.
I’m starting to get a sense of this historic part of Panama City. I appreciate eclectic neighborhoods. Seeing people different from myself is part of the gift of traveling. Truly, the Panamanian people I’ve met have been so kind. Lovely, lovely people.
Packed tonight to get ready to move on down the road tomorrow.

  • Travel Day

    November 24, 2021 in Panama ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Tuesday, we had a near SNAFU. Our driver took us to Tocumen Airport for our afternoon, Panama Airlines flight. The problem being, Panama airlines flies out of Gelabert airport. Fortunately, we were way early and had time to transfer to Gelabert. Lessoned learned.

Wednesday had a quiet day in the mountain town of Boquete.

Chatted up local, longtime (8 year+) expats.
It’s a pleasant area with an amazing, mild microclimate. — in Boquete District.

The Haven Spa Hotel is a beautiful boutique hotel. I had an amazing body scrub, massage and facial (for my birthday!)

  • Azuero Peninsula

    November 26, 2021 in Panama ⋅ 🌧 27 °C

Our travels took us to quiet stretch of Pacific Ocean beach on the Azuero peninsula.
Online, I saw beach houses in this area rent for $600 per month, so I thought it was worth checking out.

Driving in, the Azuero peninsula is like most of central Panama with farms and pastures with modern main roads and roadside services.

The destination beaches we visited, La Tablas Abajo and Playa Uverito, are excellent spots if you’re going into witness protection or seclusion to write a novel.
We’re talking a dramatic, wide beach with the thinest strip of houses, hostels, one cantina, then nothing. Farms, beef and horse pastures and scattered houses for the miles to the town of Las Tablas. Just not much there, there.
But it’s great to have visited this part of Panama coastline.
