Castell Montjuic. Stunning views, but boy it's getting hot! We had planned to walk all the way around the castle, but the heat got to us.

Montjuic Castle is a historic fortress located on a hill overlooking the city of Barcelona, Spain. Originally built in the 17th century as a military fortress, the castle has since served various functions including a prison, military museum, and currently, as a cultural center and tourist attraction. This little beach town on the Costa Brava (northern Spain on the Mediterranean) is just spectacular. Yes, that's a castle on the beach. We spent the afternoon settling in and checking out the beach.

The sand is very pebbly, and I might need to buy some cheap watersocks. Good news - it just falls off and doesn't stick like sand.

The bus ride here nearly made three of us lose our lunches due to the almost switchback curves.Read more

I don't think we could ask for a nicer place to stay. I was a little nervous about coming here because it was kind of a whim just wanting something less common for a rest after the big cities. Also, castle.

It's the first floor with the open windows right on the corner across from the beach.

Climbing the Castle

This was such a lovely, winding walk up the path to the remains of this 11th century castle just a short walk from our room.

It was a treat to walk the intact battlements between the towers!

Tossa de Mar's Castle is an impressive fortress located on the beach that has stood guard over the town for centuries. Built in the 12th century, the castle served as a crucial defensive structure, protecting the town from pirate attacks and other threats throughout the centuries. It has witnessed numerous historical events, including the Catalan Revolt in the 17th century and the Spanish Civil War in the 20th century. Today, the castle has been converted into a museum, where visitors can learn about its fascinating history and explore the ancient walls, towers, and battlements.Read more

At the top of the point is a more modern lighthouse. We then wound our way down through the narrow lanes of old town on real cobblestones (ouch!)

I'm in love with this magical place! Anya and I decided we want to live in that house with arches you can see halfway up the cliffs. :)Read more

The water isn't very warm this time of year, but once you take the plunge it's crystal clear and refreshing!

The little cove here is very calm, the only waves come from the little bit of wake generated by the ferries (which come right on to the beach).Read more
