This place doesn't even seem real!

Tossa de Mar is a charming seaside town located on the Costa Brava in Catalonia, Spain. Renowned for its stunning beauty, rich history, and tranquil atmosphere, it's a popular destination for both domestic and international tourists seeking a picturesque escape.

The town is most famous for its well-preserved medieval castle, the Vila Vella, which overlooks the bay. This ancient fortress, with its towering walls and towers, is one of the few remaining examples of a fortified medieval town on the Catalan coast. Inside these historic walls, you'll find narrow cobblestone streets, quaint white houses, and the remnants of a bygone era.

The beaches in Tossa de Mar, such as Platja Gran, are another highlight, offering golden sands, crystal clear waters, and rugged cliffs. The town also boasts a vibrant cultural scene with museums like the Municipal Museum, housed in the old governor's house within Vila Vella, which features an impressive collection of modern art alongside historical artifacts.

We had a car this time. Yes, I drove from Barcelona - we even picked up in Placa Catalunya so I got the full experience. It honestly wasn't as scary as driving in L.A., and once we were on the freeway it was a piece of cake. This gave us the freedom to check out more of the Costa Brava, and this instagrammable garden was a must-see.

The Marimurtra Botanical Garden in Blanes, near the Costa Brava, is one of Europe’s premier botanical gardens, celebrated for its collection of over 4,000 plant species. Established in the 1920s by Carl Faust, this garden spans 16 hectares and is strategically perched atop a cliff offering spectacular Mediterranean views. It features three distinct areas: subtropical, temperate, and Mediterranean, each displaying flora suited to these environments. Highlights include themed gardens like the Mexican and South African sections, and the picturesque Linnaeus Temple, a favorite spot for events. Marimurtra is not only a beautiful destination but also a hub for botanical research and conservation education.

The cobblestones in the old town are killer! People still live in here, and there are a few shops and restaurants. It's so fun to wander around and get lost in this neighborhood below the castle.

Ah! Finally the sun comes out on the Platja Gran!

The beach here has very coarse "sand". It's really more like little pebbles. It's fun to sift through the tiny rocks to find treasures, and there's no sandy mess to clean up when you leave as everything just dusts right off.

The water is breath-takingly cold this time of year but feels good. The Mediterranean is much saltier than the Pacific so is so much more buoyant.
