Anya wanted us to try her favorite Russian dumplings in downtown Anchorage. That's literally all they have on the menu - you get a choice of potato or beef dumplings, and up to four toppings (butter, hot sauce, curry, cilantro). Comes with rye bread and sour cream. Sooooo good!

It's so good to see my three girls walking ahead of me all together. :)

  • Plowy McPlowface

    November 26, 2025 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 19 °F

Anchorage names all of their snow plows. It was very exciting when Plowy McPlowface came down our street today - Bladey Gaga was also nearby in the neighborhood.

  • Earthquake!

    November 27, 2025 in the United States ⋅ ❄️ 25 °F

Figured I'd better record this since it was the main topic of conversation for the first part of the day at Thanksgiving!

We were in our AirBnB, and a snow plow was going by - we thought it was just that rumbling at first. It got stronger and continued, so Sean, Eowyn, and I ran for the nearest door frame. Anya was in the shower and Willow was downstairs in bed. The whole house felt like it was sliding back and forth on the hill, but we didn't see any damage and nothing fell. For sure the biggest earthquake any of these Oregonians have experienced by far!

It lasted less than a minute with the initial shake and aftershocks, but it felt like a loooong time.

A 6.0-magnitude earthquake rocks the Anchorage area of Alaska, largest since 2021

SUSITNA, Alaska (AP) — A 6.0-magnitude earthquake rocked the Anchorage metropolitan area Thursday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quake struck at about 8:11 a.m. local time at a depth of 69 kilometers (43 miles), according to the USGS. Its epicenter was located 12 kilometers (7 miles) west-northwest of Susitna, Alaska, an area about 67 miles (108 kilometers) northwest of the city. There were no immediate reports of significant damage.

Municipal inspectors also did not find any issues in key public infrastructure after the earthquake, according to a social media post by Anchorage Mayor Suzanne LaFrance.

A tsunami also was not expected, the U.S. Tsunami Warning System said.

Meanwhile, some residents found humor in the situation and were calling the Thanksgiving holiday “Shakesgiving” online.

Alaska is the most earthquake-prone state in the U.S. and one of the most seismically active regions in the world, according to the USGS. The state experiences a magnitude 7 earthquake almost annually.

  • New BFFs

    November 28, 2025 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 32 °F

Éowyn and Savannah are second cousins once removed (Savannah is my cousin's granddaughter). We've commented for years how much alike they are. They finally met and boy howdy were we ever right. They immediately decided they were the missing parts of each other's souls and wanted Éowyn to spend the night. They stayed up until 4 am talking, and then got up to play in the snow.Read more
