    Heading to Whistler BC!

    June 6, 2023 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 75 °F

This is just outside of Vancouver, heading for our next stop in Squamish. Look at those mountains and the sound!

British Columbia is like Oregon, but more...it makes me think of The Last Battle, where the further up and further in everyone goes into the new Narnia, the more beautiful and real it gets. And then Switzerland is further up and further in again.Read more

  • An Evening Walk in Whistler Village

    June 6, 2023 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 66 °F

After a long drive it was great to get out and about a little bit! The village was built for the 2010 Olympics and is now a very European-esque town. Anya and Éowyn accidentally matched.

Fitzsimmons Creek winds through the streets, and the glacier run-off is a gorgeous ice blue color from the minerals.

Whistler reminds us SO MUCH of Zermatt, Switzerland. The water was the same color there too!

  • Cascade Lodge

    June 6, 2023 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 64 °F

This is a lovely resort! We have two balconies and the location is fantastic. We can easily walk anywhere in the village and there are numerous trails, gondola bases, restaurants, and grocery stores nearby.

However, the parking garage is awful, lol.

  • Afternoon Walk

    June 7, 2023 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 75 °F

We'd hoped to rent bikes but the shop was closed. Instead we walked along the creek, and ambled through a little nature trail!

It was interesting to see a small, clear tributary meeting the glacier water.Read more

  • Glacial Waters

    June 7, 2023 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 77 °F

The icy blue color seen in runoff from glaciers, like Fitzsimmons Creek in Whistler, is due to a phenomenon known as glacial flour. As a glacier moves, it grinds the underlying rock into a fine powder called "rock flour." When this powder mixes with meltwater, it creates a suspension that diffuses sunlight. The suspended particles in the water preferentially scatter light in the short-wavelength spectrum, including blue and green light. However, because water absorbs more green light, we typically see the scattered light as a vivid blue. This combination of rock flour and light scattering results in the stunning, mesmerizing blue of glacier-fed bodies of water.Read more
