Golden California and Google adventures

We now know why it's called Golden California. Once we had climbed the remaining 800m of the pass (luckily in the morning this time) and quickly stopped at the Trail of 100 Giants to see some more sequoias, we got to a beautiful canyon road along Kern River. The fall colors were just amazing and the hills shined because of the golden bushes. We also found a nice lunch spot right next to the river.
We then cycled to Kernville, a nice old town with pretty cool historical buildings. As it was hot, we decided to stop for a cold drink in the saloon. A good decision: we met Joe who invited us over to his place for dinner. We spent a great evening with his girlfriend Sammy, their daughter Hazel and Sammy's dad.
After dinner, we still had to look for a campspot. The wind had stopped, it wasn't hot anymore and we had got quite some energy from the dinner, we decided to go on for a little while even though it was dark. We wanted to get to a camground South of Lake Isabella and followed a route along the lake that Google suggested. Bad decision: First it was gravel, still ok. However, after about 3km, it was closed by a gate: private property. So we had to go all the way back in the dark and on gravel. Thanks Google for this nightly adventure 😡
In the end, we were lucky to find a flat spot to pitch the tent close to the lake.Read more
