    Omaha Beach

    Omaha was the most difficult of the D-Day beaches to assault. Nicknamed “Bloody Omaha,” nearly half of all D-Day casualties were suffered here.

    There are two memorial statues in the center of the beach:

    The older memorial is from 1949. Built by thankful French, it was funded by selling scrap metal after the war and honors the two assaulting divisions, the 29th and 1st. A striking modern metal statue (The Braves, 2004) rises from the waves in honor of the liberating forces and symbolizes the rise of freedom on the wings of hope.    Okumaya devam et

    Overlord Museum

    The Overlord Museum opened in 2013. Located near the American Cemetery it is a warehouse filled with a collection of WWII-era vehicles. The Museum includes American, British and German exhibits with the museum’s highlights including Germany’s 88mm antiaircraft and antitank gun, a strafed German Panther tank, a Sherman tank, and a battlefield crane. There’s also a horse—a reminder that much of the German war machine was horse- powered.Okumaya devam et

    The Château-Gaillard, Les Andelys

    Construction of the castle began in 1196 under the direction of Richard the Lionheart. It went up at staggering speed and was completed by 1198. Richard died in 1199 and his hapless brother and successor, King John, would see the castle taken from him.     Les Andelys

    Down below the castle, the two villages of Le Grand Andelys and Le Petit Andelys grew and merged into one. Le Petit Andelys, which we explored, is the Seine-side part of town. Le Grand Andelys is now joined to Le Petit Andelys by Rue de la Republique. This part of town is set a bit back from the Seine but attracts visitors with its grand church, its bell tower, its fountain and its history museum.Okumaya devam et

    More good food & fellowship

    At each meal throughout the trip, we ate with a new group of people. We have photo memories of at least one of the couples (Debbie and Pat) who we joined for our first dinner on the Aquavit Terrace. Had Debbie not made the suggestion, we would not have the pictures.

    If Martha and I are fortunate enough to embark on another trip together, I am determined to try to obtain photos of at least one group with whom we eat per day. In retrospect, the people we break bread with are certainly as (if not more) worth remembering as the bread, are they not?     Paris by Night Tour
