Nancy gets Penguinized!

A catamaran trip to Magdelana Island to visit the Magellanic penguin breeding colony. About 7,500 breeding pairs, each normally with two chicks, return annually to breed and raise the next generation. The waters around the island are rich in sardines and we saw lots of whale spouts and dolphins and seals on the 1.5 hr trip to the island and the penguins have a great food source very close to their nests.

Most of these penguins are going through their annual moulting . . . growing a new set of feathers. It takes about 3 weeks and they are confined to land and don’t eat for the entire duration.

They make burrows in the soft ground and will live on the island for about 5 months to raise chicks. Then it is back to the ocean for the rest of the year.
