    On any given day onboard you can participate in dozens of activities. Learn how to make origami flowers, play bridge, take an Art History class, do line dancing . . . The list seems endless.

    Or you can have a blast learning how to play the ukulele or sing in a choir . . . then do a live performance in the ship’s Atrium for the whole ship to enjoy!

    A Short Penang Port Call

    Interesting city. So much street art and the wafting smells coming from all the small food vendors and restaurants was all mixed with the incense burning at the temples.

    A Loooong Day in KL

    Docked in Port Kelang this morning, up at Oh Dark Thirty to leave the ship at 0700 for the 2+ hr drive in local rush hour traffic to spend the day in Kuala Lumpur and not returning to our ship until 1800

    Another fascinating city that needs much more than a taste of a day visit

    Getting pooped out as this VaCay is long in the tooth and keeps ticking away.

    Singapore. The next course

    One of our favorite things to do when we visit a city is to book a walking food tour. We had a really excellent one today with a guide who explained the complexities of Singaporean cuisine, a melange of Chinese, Malaya, Indonesian foods and topped off with bits & bobs of cooking from around the world.

    There are the well known Hawker Halls and the lesser known local hawker markets. We hit up the local ones, places we would never have found on our own except by accident

    Singapore. Anyone Lose a Boat?

    The Marina Bay Sands Hotel is a spectacular 3 tower hotel complex with a “words don’t do it justice” rooftop “boat” that has bars, restaurants and a huge infinity pool for hotel guests

    It also has spectacular views of Singapore’s harbour area, an incredibly busy port and it looks like every ship in the world is at anchor.

    Looking from the other side of the Boat, the views of Marina Bay and the central downtown are stunning.

    We had a lovely lunch with some cruise ship friends who are also staying over in Singapore for a few days.    Læs mere

    Singapore Zoo’s Night Safari

    There is a terrific zoo in Singapore and they offer a nightly “Safari Tram” that takes visitors through the pitch black zoo on quiet little motorized “trams” where night lights allow the human eye to “see” animals feeding and resting.

    We took loads of pictures but since flash was not allowed most of them are too dark. But we did get a couple of shots. A warm up for next year in Africa

    Singapore Slings & Night Markets.

    In the early 1800s, the British East Asia Company (think Hudson Bay Company without dogsleds or canoes) sent Sir Stamford Raffles to establish a trading post on what is now Singapore island. His legacy lives on in the beautiful Raffles Hotel and the restored Long Bar, where the Colonial Administration folks met for drinks & chit chat back in the day. Because it was considered unladylike for women to drink in public the bartender invented a brightly coloured, fruit based drink that he loaded up with gin and liqueurs and created the famous Singapore Sling.

    So when in Singapore, you go to the Long Bar, drink Slings, eat the provided peanuts and litter the floor with the shells and watch the bartenders use a hand cranked, 6 container drink mixer machine go to work.

    Then you head off to a local Night Market for dinner along with half of Singapore and practice the art of finding a table in the crowded mayhem and deciding what to eat . . . There are hundreds of food stalls. Bonus points if you get a table that is blessed with a ceiling fan!

    Then you say goodbye to your Perth cruise shipmates and realize everyone is on the homeward bound leg of their vacations.    Læs mere

    Home to a beautiful sunny warm early Autumn Vancouver day

    Some final thoughts on “The Next Train to Singapore”

    We could not have expected this trip to turn out as wonderfully as it has. The daunting thoughts of 16 hour long flights, visiting with friends we met years ago and haven’t seen since, a long train trip through the middle of “Can’t get there from here” Australia and visiting the Open Air Street Steam Baths of Asia made us wonder if we had bitten off more than we would be able to chew.

    Turns out we had nothing to worry about. Our Aussie hosts Karen, Bobby, Anne, Peter, Celine and Vanne were just terrific, it was like the years apart vanished and we picked up where we left off in a Panama Canal lock or riding in a Mekong River ox cart. We are the luckiest people to meet the most wonderful fellow travellers wherever we go. From lunch in the Gong to lawn bowling with those weird not actually round balls in North Sydney, we were treated like special guests and we so truly appreciated the best hospitality in the world. . . . Aussie Hospitality!

    That wonderful Aussie hospitality continued and our fortuitous meeting with Sam & Keith in the ship boarding process in Freo, where we jointly “dealt with” a queue jumper, has cemented my belief “when in doubt travel with Aussies (and a transplanted Scot!)”

    If you can work it in your Bucket List plans, take the train across Australia. Sitting in the Indian Pacific lounge car watching the endless horizon of the Nullarbor seemingly never get closer makes my inner geographer’s heart go all pitter-patter and really, really happy to have experienced that trip. 110% unique✅✅

    Bali, Phuket, Penang and Kuala Lumpur were all interesting places to visit but Singapore upstaged them all. We could easily have spent another week++ in Singapore and still just made a few surface scratches. I am already deep in the depths of intense noodle withdrawal pains!

    Some people live to travel. With age and a modicum of water under the wisdom bridge, I have come to understand we travel to live, to see and feel and taste and smell, to experience what is new and different, but most of all to meet people, to smile and say hello, to look up and blurt out “Hi, we are Nancy & Paul from Vancouver, where are you from ?” and then just let ‘er rip😂😂

    Of course you meet a few duds as you go, but the good folks far outweigh the bad ones and like a good cruise ship, you keep moving on to the next port and make friendships that hopefully endure the passage of time

    I know I speak for Nancy as well when I say thank you+++ to all our Travel Friends.

    So about your plans to visit Vancouver ???
