The Slipstream folks were super and the canoe is so beautiful! We discussed how to handle the canoe and Slipstream Stan said the most common canoe damage comes from canoes blowing away, primarily when people are loading or unloading from vehicles. We noticed right away how easily a breeze can pull that ultralite canoe away!

On the advice of Stan, we decided to put in at the headwaters of the Kunjamuk River.

  • Kunjamuk Paddle

    October 18, 2020 in the United States ⛅ 52 °F

The Kunjamuk launch spot is off RT 32/8. Pretty area, grassy.

At the entrance to the river proper is this BIG beaver dam. You can go to the right and paddle around to a place where it looks like you can easily step out and pull the canoe  past the dam. We saved that for another day and turned around to paddle through the meandering paths in the bay.

The bay has lots of river grass with various water passages, some of them dead ends. This is where the Kunjamuk meets the Sacandaga River. It comes in at a T junction. Downstream on the Sacandaga is a dam so you can't go far that way. Stan says the Kunjamuk is canoeable for many miles. We'll have to come back!

  • Campsite West River Road

    October 19, 2020 in the United States 🌧 48 °F

There were a few good campsites along this road (which ends at a Northville -Placid trailhead). This campsite #6 was the best. Lovely, remote, quiet. No cell service for miles though.

Sometimes called Whitehouse Campsites, Whitehouse Trail, etc.

Some info: "West River Road currently goes 7 miles from Wells to the old ghost town of Whitehouse, complete with two historic chimneys and several campsites. A scenic area, with views of the West Branch of Sacanadaga River and Dugaway Mountain. There is an old cementary located up there, along with one of the biggest pedestrian suspension bridges in Adirondacks. The Northville-Placid Trail also runs about a 1/4 mile from Whitehouse, and is frequently accessed from the Whitehouse Parking Area.

Although a long distance trail many people use the Northville-Placid Trail to access the wilderness for day trips. The Whitehouse Trailhead is used for short hikes across a unique suspension bridge over the West Branch of the Sacandaga River. Other popular destinations from Whitehouse include Big Eddy, Mud Lake, and Hamilton Lake Stream.

While the state has been trying to close off West River Road since the initial purchase of Whitehouse in the early 1970s, as early as 1972 it was proposed to be added to Silver Lake Wilderness. The latest 2006 Silver Lake Wilderness Unit Management Plan also calls for closure of the road, but no action has been taken, the road is still well maintained by the Town of Wells all the way out Whitehouse."
