We are actually doing something touristy in New York. Marty has a friend (a regular at the bar) who offered to give us an inside look around.

  • Another beginning

    17. September 2019 in den USA ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Our last day visiting the kids. We haven't been very active here lately. Buying new work shoes for Martin and picking up new runners for Jimmy and helping Rosie pack some things for her move don't really make great travel news. But things should be picking up.Weiterlesen

  • The British library

    18. September 2019 in England ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Arriving in London after a smooth flight and an easy train ride in from Gatwick to St Pancras Station we found ourselves with
an hour to fill in before our room would be available. After a quick coffee we decided on a quick look around The British Library which was conveniently located just down the road. Interesting building, of course, and a display of historical documents as varied as original scores of Bach and Chopin, an original copy of the Magna Carta and even a draft of Paul McCartney's Yesterday.Weiterlesen

  • Regent's Park

    18. September 2019 in England ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

Having been gifted a beautiful sunny day in London, and safely moved into our studio, it was time for a quick walk around Regent's Park. It's a huge park so it might be better to call it a quick walk around a little part of Regent's Park - mainly the Queen's Garden end of the park. Lots of roses for her maj but quite a variety of flowers and foliage as well. Surprised at how many flowers are still in bloom and looking fresh. But then the temperature is a mild 24 ish and the sun is shining - so why not.Weiterlesen

  • Eurostar Station

    20. September 2019 in England ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

Time to bid London farewell after our whirlwind visit. It has been quite a first week and a bit for us. We are off to Paris on the Eurostar and then on to Chartres a town dating from the middle ages not far from there. From our Hervey Bay home to bustling Brooklyn with its tree lined streets and Brownstones to the amazing mix of the super modern and the grand old buildings of London and now to the cobbled streets and winding lanes of old Chartres - that's quite a mix of cultures and environments. It will be nice to just settle into France for a couple of weeks.
We were awarded a special travellers' award today for smooth connections. We got into Gare du Nord on the Eurostar at 11:50 and managed to get metro thickets, find the right train, get to Montpernasse station and catch a 1:06 train to Chartres!

  • Chartres Cathedral

    21. September 2019 in Frankreich ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

As cathedrals go this one rates pretty well on the Douglas' cathedral rating scheme. It was free (big one), they provided a bit of interesting background (but not too much), beautiful windows not too crowded and some interesting restoration work in progress. We happily mosied about finding interesting odds and sods for quite a while.Weiterlesen

  • Église St Pierre

    21. September 2019 in Frankreich ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

Another cathedral - or just an old church? Just an old church of would seem. Why you would build an enormous church here when there was an even more enormous cathedral just up the hill is beyond our limited understanding - maybe to give a whole other group of people headaches trying to figure out how to restore /keep it from falling down. It was a good find for us though, a cool resting spot along the way of our day's wandering.Weiterlesen

  • Hotel Venise

    22. September 2019 in Frankreich ⋅ 🌧 18 °C

Back to Paris for a couple of days. Someone seems to have stolen the cathedral out our window and our room is pretty basic. But then I suppose we can find something to do in Paris.
In fact we seem to have had a good day. After all that blue sky we have had to put up with we struck some light rain today. It was still fun just wandering about Paris people watching and soaking up the atmosphere.Weiterlesen

  • Restaurant Rayan

    22. September 2019 in Frankreich ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

What better way to finish off our first day in Paris than with a Lebanese meal at the Restaurant Rayan. We hadn't had a Lebanese meal in ages and we lob into a budget hotel 70 metres down the road from a tiny little restaurant that served us up a Lebanese feast. The place maybe had seating for 16 and I didn't hear any English from anyone but us. But the service was quick and friendly and the food was very nice.Weiterlesen

  • Sacre Coeur

    23. September 2019 in Frankreich ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

We visited Montmartre four years ago in the persistent rain. Even in the rain we enjoyed the area and we thought we would try again in the sunshine. As the photos attest, we found plenty of sunshine this time. Set high above the city the area offers beautiful views, the lovely Sacre Coeur and rambling higledy pigledy streets to explore. And a funicular to get you up the with enough puff left to explore with.Weiterlesen

  • Cafe Renoir

    23. September 2019 in Frankreich ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

One thing we did thoroughly investigate last time was the Musee de Montmartre. It's amazing how much extra appeal museums have on a rainy day. We had enjoyed the cafe as well, so we decided to go back. Luckily they sold a separate ticket that just covered the garden, which we hadn't seen, of and the cafe. The perfect combination.Weiterlesen

  • Musee de l'Orangerie

    23. September 2019 in Frankreich ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

We seem to have hit on a theme today. The last time we visited the Musee de L'orangerie we were hoping to see Monet's famous water lilly paintings. For some reason the galleries where they are displayed wasn't open so we checked out the rest of the museum which was very good. Today we thought we might have another go at the water lilies and this time they are on display but the rest of the museum is closed. Talk about closing a circle.Weiterlesen

  • Farewell Paris

    23. September 2019 in Frankreich ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

We have wrapped up our little Paris revisit and we are on the train somewhere between Paris and Lyon. Last night we caught the metro down to watch the Eiffel Tower do its thing and had a bit of a walk around for a taste of the lights.
After 6 nights in fairly cramped hotel rooms it will be nice to settle into a roomier airbnb in Lyon. We will staying 5 nights which will also be nice after three shorter stays.
