Mental Sauna

Lapinlahti Hospital in the western part of Helsinki was once one of the oldest mental health facility in Europe. The hospital was founded in 1841 and operated for over 160 years before its closure in 2008. Now it houses a cafe, restaurants and is used as an event venue. Next to the former hospital building lies the "oldest still functioning sauna in Helsinki that is open to the public" according to the webpage. The sauna building was completed in the 1880s and lies next to a bay. In winter the beach, the way to the icehole, the boat next to it and everything else is very frozen.Read more
