Traveler I said that the United States is such a large and diverse county that’s it is quite hard to pin down compared to somewhere like Portugal where there are only like 10 million people. But that our national identity is based on ‘freedom’ but that freedom is hard to understand without comparing it something else. So not the freedom to do something, but in the sense of being free from something. I think it’s in part because we are a nation of immigrants. In our national story and family stories there are often themes of a ‘freedom from’ whether that’s poverty, slavery, war, persecution, communism, etc and that to see ourselves as free, we very often see ourselves as being in conflict with something else.
