Power Trip

The Castle of Santa Bárbara is perched on top of M­ount Benacantil. It looks higher and further away than it actually was. Although the 166-metre ascent is not an easy climb in the heat.
Castillo de Santa Bárbara is one of Spain’s largest mediaeval fortresses
providing great views of Alicante’s bay. It was built in the ninth century by the Arabs. In December 1248, the castle was captured by the troops of Alfonso, son of Ferdinand of Castile, later known as Alfonso X the Wise. In commemoration of the brilliant victory of St. Barbara’s Day, the fortress was named after St. Barbara. Lots of changing of hands and uses followed and the different areas atop show different century elements.

Walked down through the Santa Cruz neighbourhood passed beautiful houses. The Santa Cruz Chuch closed of course dates from the late 18th century and was built over the Ampolla Tower, one of the few remaining stretches of the old city walls. Then walked down the walls back to hotel.

Headed out for dinner at El Canto, tapas bar. So delicious and great atmosphere. Expecting queues we arrived 10 mins before 8pm opening. Glad we arrived when we did as 30+ people waiting by the time they rolled up their doors and a constant queue the whole night.
