      My time in Qatar started with a bang! Or, more aptly, a blow torch! Well, it felt like it anyway; it was a boiling 44 degrees.

      Doha is an interesting place. It's had significant change over the last 25 years due to their abundance of natural gas. A bedouin past with a pearl diving economy that has rapidly changed to a city of skyscrapers. According to my guide, the first tower (skyscraper) was built in 1999. There are now 61. By 2028, there will be 70. Most of these buildings are on man made islands. When you look at my photos of the city, consider there was nothing there 25 years ago.

      My guide also said they're trying to maintain some of their traditions with their falcon events, some buildings, and having camels in the city. They do a changing of the (police) guards on camels. It was quite a spectacle, but I'm not sure it's traditional. 😆 They also have a number of dhows in the port. These are traditional boats used to find pearls. They're no longer used, but they do make a great photo with the city in the background!

      Unfortunately, there are no more pearls to be found, nor sharks, dolphins, or other big fish...

      But they do have outdoor air conditioning. 🫢 Thank god I'm not paying the power bill!

      The Souq Waqif is worth a visit for shopping, delicious food, and a good atmosphere. I went to a couple of museums - Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) and The National Museum of Qatar. The museum buildings are amazing, particularly MIA. The people were lovely, and I felt safe walking around alone (even at night when I was trying to avoid the boiling sun!)

      Doha is definitely worth a few days stopover, just not from May-September due to the heat.

      I waited until I arrived in Italy before sharing this post. Smartraveller told me not to review any restaurants, services, or culture while in Qatar. It can be considered a cybercrime. I'm not sure if that's the case, but I didn't want to take the risk!      Leer más

      Quality Qatar ✈️

      Up at Sparrows this morning: 5am 🕔 packed and ready to depart the cesspit that is ‘Putrid Papillo’ 🏨
      There is not one member of our tour group that is determined to bombard the review pages in smear campaigns to rival a Trump Administration! Not much is guaranteed in life but this is: Never 👎🏻 again!

      Anyway… Neil…”….letting it go..!” 😝

      Seamless airport check-in and security. Rome’s airport is fantastic. Clean, efficient & the staff actually look refreshed & happy to be there; a rare sight these days! A+ ✈️

      TripADeal actually has worked for us well on our journey home (…well, for me anyway…) I’m really excited 😜 for the long 27 hour layover because it means they booked us a 5 star hotel complete with personal transfers to & from: bonus holi-day if you ask me!Booked a tour for a sightseeing around Doha and break up an otherwise relentlessly long journey Down Under A+ TripADeal 👏

      As a Privilege Member on Qatar 🇶🇦 ✈️ I get complimentary wi-fi for an hour! How spiffy to actually get internet 🛜 access 35,000 feet 👣 in the air! Fun 🤩

      Qatar is such a great airline! One of the best! I would never hesitate in recommending flying with them. The meals were and are delicious and the service is great A+ Qatar 🇶🇦

      On arrival in Doha we discovered just how quiet 🤫 and clean the airport really is! Spotless 👍🏻 🧽
      We also discovered how efficient the processes are because when we went up to the Doha information counter the workers knew exactly who we were and immediately took our bags and us in a chauffeured limousine to the Holiday Inn 🏨 which is a cut above anything we have stayed in this holiday! It is five star ⭐️ with a pool 🏊‍♂️ and a bar which we discovered sells glasses of wine 🍷 for $25 and cocktails 🍸 for $35! We don’t mind spending generously on holidays but not ridiculously so we went out into the 40° heat ☀️🥵 and found an authentic little restaurant and got an entire meal 🥘 for less than $40. It was very Indian influenced and the owners were very kind and generous, and knew all about the MCG and the cricket in Australia 🇦🇺😝
      German felt his stomach churning so we came back to the comfort of our five star 🌟 establishment and called it a night… Tour planned tomorrow: covering the main sites so that will be my final holiday post… With a heavy heart… 🥺😢💜
      LT, like the gals in Sex & the City 🌆 we may even run into Richard Spurt out & about tomorrow 😉😝💦☀️

      And an interesting tidbit for you… Our limousine driver told us that you can be fined if you don’t have air conditioning in your car for the tourists when they arrive 🙏👍🏻☀️      Leer más

      We had the most amazing time with our host and hostess, Rob and Ellen. They put together an amazing itinerary for us. We are now on our way to Doha airport for part two of this adventure… Off to Bangkok. We will arrive in the evening, just in time to go to a night market for dinner, have a little meeting, and go to bed.       Heute sind wir nun in Qatar angekommen unserem letzten Hafen vor Dubai. Wir haben uns entschieden hier ohne Ausflug von Bord zu gehen. Da Thom jetzt nicht so groß Lust hatte sich die Stadt anzusehen, dachten wir, gehen wir mal über den Souq Waqif von Doha. Der Souq an sich ist wirklich einer der schönsten und größten auf denen wir bis jetzt waren. Es gibt wirklich alles zu kaufen, von Kleidung über Gewürze und Früchte bis hin zu Tieren, was wir weniger schön fanden. Aber auch die dort beliebten Falken gab es in einem Teil des Marktes in zu kaufen inklusive einer eigenen Klinik nur für Falken. Nach gut drei stunden die wir über diesen Markt gelaufen sind hatten wir denke immer noch nicht jede ecke erkundigt. Geschweige denn einer der vielen Restaurants oder Shisha Bars ausprobiert.
      Wir haben uns dann aber trotzdem entschlossen zurück an Bord zu gehen und unseren Whirlpool bei diesem schönen Wetter zu genießen.      Leer más

      Day in Doha

      An early arrival for a stopover in Doha. 25 hours between connecting flights meant we had to collect and recheck-in luggage, A simple task except that Doha’s ‘policy’ meant that 6 hours was the maximum luggage could be checked-in before flying! Eleven bags in a hire car was not going to be possible, so after a little persuasion we were allowed to check in the bags with the risk that they might not arrive in Nairobi
      😯.

      A tired drive to the hotel, a shower, a French breakfast in a patisserie and then we headed to the beach - it is hot - over 40 degrees, although apparently it gets to 50 degrees so today was fine! Katara beach was good and the water very warm - the best place to be as sitting on the beach was not really an option in the heat.

      After some ice cream to cool down we drove to Souq Waqif, the old traditional souq in Doha. A hive of busyness and trading, but not at all threatening with respectful traders who did not persist - perhaps reflecting the fact that Qatar is the richest country by GDP per capita. Much to Emma’s excitement there was a ‘Local Dates Exhibition’ where date producers brought their dates to be sampled - a welcome appetiser before dinner of local grilled meats and salads.

      Back to the hotel for a roof top swim. Qatar is a real mix of traditional and modern, with warm and friendly people. A night’s sleep and then to the airport to go to Nairobi, hopefully with our luggage...      Leer más

      Tschö Dubai und hallo Katar

      So nachdem mein Visum, obwohl mir das die Behörde da versprochen hatte, immernoch nicht da ist, ging es jetzt nach Katar. Los gings diesmal vom Sharja Airport, der ziemlich klein aber noch viel schicker und sauberer ist als der in Dubai. Fotografieren war leider nicht erlaubt.

      Eine kleine Zusammenfassung für Dubai bzw. den Emiraten wie ich es erlebt habe.
      Dubai ist eigentlich ein riesiges Disneyland um mal gleich zu dem Punkt zu kommen, der mich am meisten stört - es ist eben alles künstlich. Da ist (fast) nichts gewachsen oder historisch entstanden. Es fehlt irgendwie nur noch das Oktoberfest mit Halal-Rinds Würschtln. Kulturell ist das halt Alles sehr dünn. Ja man kauft sich die Rechte am Louvre, baut ihn nach aber es ist eben nicht DER louvre.

      Aber es ist eine gut gemachte Stadt, die sehr sicher ist, an manchen Ecken unheimlich schön. Man kann Luxus erleben für bezahlbares Geld. Taxis sind günstig, essen kann man sehr gut für wenig Geld, ausser in den Touri-Gegenden-klar. Das Wetter war in der letzten Woche perfekt.
      Als Tourist wird einem ständig Geld aus der Tasche gezogen...immer so dass es gerade nicht soo weh tut aber dafür ständig.

      Zu den Arabern die ja nur 10 Prozent der Bevölkerung ausmachen: ich mag die. Sie sind schon in ihrer Blase und sie lassen keine Zweifel, dass das ihr Land ist aber ich habe die als weltoffen und entspannt jedem gegenüber erlebt. Sie sind ziemlich faul, stehen auf Autos, schöne hochwertige Dinge, keine halben Sachen und was mir besonders gefällt, sie machen Dinge auch, wenn sie wirtschaftlich wahrscheinlich keinen Sinn machen - einfach nur weil sie bock drauf haben. Einiges habe ich bereits verstanden, warum sie sind wie sie sind (ungewertet, heisst nicht zwingend dass ich alles gut finde)
      Ich nehme ihnen das, was sie bewerben und von sich und anderen fordern, irgendwie ab: Diversität und Toleranz.
      Man merkt dass man mit sich und der Religion ringt, wie weit man sich zugunsten Tourismus öffnen kann. Dubai ist da noch mit am lockersten, Abu Dhabi und Sharja eher streng.

      Die Inder und wahrscheinlich auch Pakistani (schwer zu unterscheiden), die insgesamt den größten Teil der Einwohner stellen (ein Drittel), sind mir am meisten auf den Keks gegangen und nicht nur mir-man merkt dass das zunehmend ein Problem wird. Wenn da nicht die ganz gut harmonierenden Religionen wären, hätten sie mit den Arabern so gar nichts gemein.

      Aankomst qatar

      Het luchthaven hotel was zeer goed, enkel het geruis van de broodnodige airco was te horen in mijn kamer. En na uitchecken gewoon 100 meter wandelen naar de bagage checkin is ook relax.
      Na 8 uur vliegen aangekomen in qatar, waar de 40 graden direct voelbaar waren. Ik had gemerkt op google streetview dat er een metro ingang was voor de deur van het hotel waardoor ik eens de taxi kon vermijden en de spotgoedkope metro nemen.
      Qatar blijkt zeer mooi te zijn, en duur. Ik schrijf dit tijdens het drinken van een glas fruitsap van 6 euro.
      Een groot pluspunt van deze stad is dat de straten wandelbaar zijn, en het traditionele centrum autovrij. Daar zijn de souks en de restaurants en heb ik de hele namiddag en avond doorgebracht. De souks zijn met airco, en zelfs op de terrasjes buiten zetten ze airco's. Overdag zie je vrijwel niemand, maar eens de zon onder gaat komt iedereen buiten. Ik ga het wel niet laat maken, tis een lange dag geweest door de extra 5 uren tijdzone verschil.      Leer más

      Angekommen im Hotel, was diesmal echt okay ist und für 60 Euro inkl. Frühstück (was ich aber verschlafen habe) auch günstig ist, erstmal was gegessen und dann gelangweilt und dann ein Plan geschmiedet: Weggehen. Und Jaa das geht auch in Katar... allerdings schwierig, wirklich nur als Tourist und nur in den 5 Sterne Bunkern und mit Pass scannen und so weiter ;) Den Weg dahin beschreibe ich mal in den Fotos...

      Das Bier hat 13 euro gekostet. Scheint son standard zu sein.. war es mir aber mal wieder wert :)      Leer más
