An Ancestry Trip

This time I set out to locate some graveyards, and potentially the resting place of my husband's great grandfather, George Henry Tryon. I had a few days before my husband would catch up with me for the Orillia Pirate Festival. Read more

After exploring the cemetery until the rain got too heavy, we made our way to the Kinross Pond Park, just behind Tim Horton's/CT gas bar/McDonald's. We spent the entire afternoon here in a downpour, and then slept here without incident.Read more

  • Adventures in Walmart Camping

    August 30, 2023 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

Not willing to risk exorbitant parking fines in Orillia, we spent two nights here at the Walmart. There were a few other overnight travelers, and no hassles with staying over night.

I spent some time working on bird toys in the parking lot. Having their toys on the curtain rod is just not working through the day.

Husband met up with us here, and we left the van all day while at the Pirate Party.

  • Gull Lake Rotary Park - Gravenhurst

    August 30, 2023 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

We spent the afternoon at Gull Lake Rotary Park, right on the water. Nice public restrooms, lots of shade, and a lovely breeze.

I was hoping to spend the night in Gravenhurst, but I didn't scope the area out through the day. Gravenhurst is very anti vanlife - no overnight parking anywhere, huge signs in all public lots, not even Walmart... So we drove to Walmart in Orillia instead, in the dark, arriving way later than I've 'gone to bed' so far.Read more

  • Bell Falls Campground - Waubaushene

    Sep 1–3, 2023 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

Husband's brother was camping near Midland for the weekend, so we figured why not? Lovely little campground, and we got a shady spot across from the waterfalls. Perfect. And then it rained...

We had hydro, so we took the opportunity to get all of our electronics charged back up. Sadly, it did not occur to me to get a pic of our camp site set up.

We had a nice visit. Everyone met the birds. Slept peacefully.

  • Orillia Pirate Party

Having enjoyed the Ontario Pirate Festival so much, we changed plans from another festival to attend the Orillia Pirate Party. What an utter disappointment. While well thought out and planned on paper, it seemed to be an odd hodge-podge of festival activities and reenactors, rather than a pirate festival. It felt more like the War of 1812 (which was awesome) reenactors tried to convert to pirate life, and a poor job was done all around. Add to that the stress of being in Orillia with their weird parking fees and bylaws, and we just weren't feeling it.

We only stayed for one day, and didn't even take any photos.
