    We took the tender in and had a wonderful private walking tour of Hvar. We saw the charming old town, the Piazza, the Arsenal, and a Franciscan monastery. Our local guide was an expert on the history, and customs of this beautiful city. He was also able to explain the background of the various architectural styles of the buildings.

    In medieval times, Hvar (city) rose to importance within the Venetian Empire as a major naval base. Prosperity brought culture and the arts, with one of the first public theatres in Europe, nobles palaces and many fine communal buildings.

    This port city ended up being a very pleasant surprise.
