• Bali Day 7

    30 kwietnia 2018, Indonezja ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

I spent most of my final day on Bali at the zoo! Well, first I had to get there which took around 90 minutes. Lots of traffic. But the trip there was a nice opportunity to see a little more of Bali.

The zoo itself was nice and the animals seemed to be thriving and they had a fair amount of space. In places like this you tend to hear some horror stories, but it seemed to be a decent enough place.

The zoo was not huge but fine for a few hours. Not a lot of super exotic animals but always fun to see a tiger napping, half-immersed in a puddle of water, or a couple of lions having a heated argument. You could also ride an elephant but I didn’t partake.

After getting back to the hotel it was time to say goodbye to the good life of free cocktails and lounging at the beach. So I celebrated by lounging at the beach, followed by a free cocktail. Cheers!

I then returned to the dreadful Bali airport where I broke the record for how many times I had my passport checked within a short time. I also had my baggage scanned twice (with some lucky folks getting it scanned at the gate too, in case the previous two scans were not enough) — and that’s when *leaving* the fucking place! I think they have some unresolved daddy issues inside the Indonesian airport authority offices. At least the airport held a nice surprise: a mini Hard Rock Café. That’s awesome! 😮🤘

Now I am in Singapore again for the last few shenanigans before it’s back to reality again..

  • Bali Day 6

    29 kwietnia 2018, Indonezja ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

Today I went to The Bali Collection - a place in Nusa Dua with a bunch of shops and restaurants. The hotel has a free shuttle there so I figured I would check it out. I forgot to bring money and cards, so I didn’t buy anything. But I did venture out by the beach to explore some more of the 5-star hotels in Nusa Dua. Especially the Grand Hyatt and St. Regis are two huge and very impressive hotels. St. Regis has a perfect beach, and I spotted some of their villas right by the ocean. Probably very expensive!

Otherwise I hung out by my own pool and also spent a little time in the lounge.

    Last day in Bali tomorrow!

  • Bali Day 5

    28 kwietnia 2018, Indonezja ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

Another quiet day in the sun! After sampling the nice breakfast buffet, I spent some time by the beach. The hotel has a nice, secluded beach which is pretty quiet. Not a lot of people there either!

Later in the day I tried the afternoon tea service at the suites lounge. They served an impressive spread with a lot of tasty things. And afterwards it was time for the usual free cocktails.

  • Bali Day 4

    27 kwietnia 2018, Indonezja ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Today I moved out of the Conrad and into the Hilton Bali. At this hotel I also have a pool villa and it’s actually much bigger than the Conrad one! The pool itself is fairly large and is connected to a nice outdoor patio with a free mini bar and everything. Very nice. The only thing missing is a view! All you can see is trees and bushes.

This hotel is also undergoing renovation, even more so than the other one. There is quite a bit of construction noise if you are near the pool or lobby which is a bit annoying.

This hotel even has monkeys! Pretty crazy but there is an area outside where a bunch of them are roaming around, climbing the trees and chewing on branches. I’ve never been to a hotel with wild monkeys. That’s a first.

When staying in a villa I have access to a lounge which also has free cocktails and snacks between 5 and 7. Great concept! So I had a few of those, and later dinner at a restaurant by the beach :)

  • Bali Day 3

    26 kwietnia 2018, Indonezja ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

Pretty quiet day. After breakfast I hung out by the Spa pool for a bit. Had a nice cocktail and some spring rolls. Having food and drinks served by the pool never gets old!

In the afternoon I moved into my new “room” - a pool villa! It’s actually a little house, complete with a bedroom, large bathroom and a nice outdoor area with a small pool and even an outdoor tub. There’s also a little garden with palm trees and everything. It was a bit too expensive to stay in this villa for all three nights, but I figured it would be fun to try it out for just one day.

In the early evening I went to the lounge again for more free cocktails and snacks. It’s a nice benefit of staying in one of their more expensive rooms!

Tomorrow I move to a different hotel - more on that later!

  • Bali Day 2

    25 kwietnia 2018, Indonezja ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

First full day in Bali! I started off with some breakfast in the main restaurant - a good buffet with lots of choices.

After that I went on a walk in the Nusa Dua area to check out the beach, and some of the many other hotels close by. There are some big brands concentrated around here, like The Westin and the Grand Hyatt. Many of the hotels are pretty amazing, with big pools and swanky beach bars.

Unfortunately my own hotel is currenly undergoing a massive renovation, so about half the property is shut down. This includes the main pool that they are famous for, and a couple of restaurants. The hotel is still nice, but will definitely be quite a different experience when renovations are done.

Until then, their spa pool is open which is really awesome. I hung out there for a few hours and had some lunch, served right by the pool of course.

Later I visited the Suites Lounge where they offer free snacks and cocktails between 5 and 7 in the evening, so naturally I had a few of those :)

Tomorrow I move into the Pool Villa which should be fun!

  • Singapore Day 2 + Bali Day 1

    24 kwietnia 2018, Indonezja ⋅ 🌙 15 °C

It was hard to say goodbye to the amazing Marina Bay Sands hotel this morning, but alas I had only booked one night this time around. Before leaving I had a nice walk all around the marine area, where I saw some other fancy hotels and the historic Fullerton hotel. It’s definitely an interesting city. Everything is very clean and pristine, especially inside the fancy shopping center at Marina Bay Sands. The floor was so clean you could have eaten your dinner off it!

Speaking of eating - I had lunch (fish & chips) at Gordon Ramsey’s restaurant Bread Street Kitchen which was also very good. Great service from staff - otherwise I’m sure Ramsey would scream at them. I even got a cookie (or a whole jar full of them actually) when I had finished lunch.

By the way, this was the second time in as many days that I chose the fish. Normally not a big fan; maybe because the fish at work back home is shit 😀

At Singapore’s Changi airport I was also treated to free snacks and the airport has various green areas - one featured a small pool with colorful fish (first time on this trip I saw a fish that didn’t end up in my belly).

It has been named the best airport in the world several times in a row, and I can definitely see why.

If Changi is the best, Bali’s airport might be the worst. Flying there from Singapore only took two hours, but after arrival you have to endure 3 lines before you can leave: first immigration, then customs and finally you get your bag scanned which is quite unusual at arrival! They also had drug-sniffing dogs around that passed by the same line maybe 4 times. After getting out of that whole performance, you are met by screaming taxi drivers trying to win customers. Charming.

When getting to the hotel, the car (an official hotel shuttle) was scanned for bombs. They definitely don’t fuck around with security here! It took me five minutes to get out of the airport in New York the last time I was in the US.

Anyway, I finally got to the hotel - the luxurious five star Conrad where I was upgraded (for free, yay) to a large suite with a view of the garden. I also paid to upgrade my last night of the 3 night stay to a Pool Villa. More on that later!

  • First day in Singapore

    23 kwietnia 2018, Singapur ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

So I made it to Singapore very early this morning after a 12-hour direct flight from Copenhagen. I travelled with Singapore Airlines - recently crowned the best airline in the world. It was indeed a very good flight with many small touches that the competitors don’t have - at least in economy. The food was also very good, and everything went well.

Once I got to Singapore, I took a metro train to my hotel - the iconic Marina Bay Sands, probably the city’s landmark hotel. It is made up of three huge towers connected by the world’s biggest rooftop pool across all three towers. Aside from the hotel, there’s also a bunch of shops (all the big brands like Gucci and Versace), a theater, museum, restaurants, bars, a big casino and more.

I spent most of the day exploring the hotel grounds and the nearby Gardens by the Bay, and of course the famous pool. I had lunch at the Super Heroes Café - a very unique restaurant and shop dedicated to the DC heroes like Superman and Batman. Their food and drinks had creative names related to the characters. Fun place!

I also saw Spectra - an impressive light and water show by the bay with colorful water fountains that ‘dance’ along to the music.

Tomorrow I have a few more hours in Singapore and then it’s off to Bali! 🌴
