    Krabi Day 5

    Another day, another boat tour! Today I had my last full-day boat tour in the Krabi region.

    Today’s trip was focused on the popular Phi Phi islands. The first one we visited was indeed a bit of a tourist trap. I think I counted over 30 boats all docked at the small beach. It’s a gorgeous beach though. Powdery, soft, white sand and beautiful water. It was fun to see this magical place in person.

    Speaking of which, we also saw the fabled Maya Bay beach which was used as the location of Leonardo DiCaprio’s search for a hidden paradise in the movie “The Beach”. Since the movie came out almost 20 years ago it has been a very popular tourist attraction. In fact, the tourist activity has left the place so environmentally ruined that it needs time to recover, and is thus closed indefinitely. As such we only saw it from a distance from the boat but it still looked pretty spectacular.

    As the other times, the tour company served a nice bbq lunch right on the beach. That’s the 4th day in a row I’ve had lunch in such an awesome setting. I could definitely get used to this! 😀

    We didn’t visit as many places today as yesterday, and didn’t do much exploring, but all of the islands and destinations I’ve seen on those three tours have been great.

    After returning to the hotel, I watched the sunset from my hotel’s infinity pool - with cheap cocktails of course.

    For dinner I decided to throw myself at the big buffet again. As it turns out there is a whole room just for desserts that I somehow entirely missed yesterday, so I had to return to the scene of the crime. Apparently it’s the biggest buffet in the area so it’s lucky that my hotel is hosting it!    もっと詳しく

    Krabi Day 6 + Koh Samui Day 1

    I spent this morning at my hotel in Krabi where I had to try the spa tub on my balcony - of course!

    After leaving the hotel around noon I got to the airport to catch my flight to the island of Samui. It only took about an hour to get there so it was a pretty short flight, but the airline was very nice and apparently voted the best in the world for domestic.

    At the cute Samui airport I was met by the driver from my hotel and we drove the hour-long trip to the other side of the island. My hotel, the 5-star Conrad, is very isolated and built on a hill or cliff. Each room (including mine!) is actually a villa with its own pool!

    Indeed, my villa is very luxurious and has the most amazing ocean view. After getting a drink at one of the bars I returned to my villa to watch the incredible and beautiful sunset. Just amazing!

    I ended the evening with a lovely dinner - outside of course - and a nice little walk back to my villa.    もっと詳しく

    Koh Samui Day 2

    Long day on the seas! I got up quite early this morning to prepare for a day of yachting. My hotel was the first on the pick-up route, so I was already enroute before 7 am. After a long drive we arrived at the pier and set sail around 8.30.

    It was a beautiful big yacht that was designed so you could relax on the deck, lying down, while we sailed. And we sailed a lot! It was almost ten hours of sailing all together.

    During the day we stopped at two islands with lovely beaches, and at one of them there was a steep climb to a viewing platform with stellar views of the beach, and a lagoon on the other side. Quite a workout in that heat but definitely worth it.

    During the afternoon we also had a great lunch on the boat. And on the way back we saw the sunset of course! I think I will get my fair share of sunset action on this trip, not to mention sailing.. and sailing!

    The drive back to the hotel was looong, especially with traffic, but I eventually made it back and had a nice dinner.    もっと詳しく

    Koh Samui Day 3

    After trying the delicious breakfast buffet at my hotel, I got on a free shuttle to Chaweng Beach which is probably the most touristy area of Samui.

    I first visited a large shopping mall which was interesting to see - even though I didn’t buy anything. In the surrounding area it was similar to Ao Nang with a lot of restaurants, hotels, tour operators and tons of massage places!

    The street was a bit messy and stressful in general so I made my way to the actual beach which was crowded but really nice.

    For lunch I went to the local Hard Rock Café - of course! It has become a tradition now to always visit the local Hard Rock when I travel. I must have been to more than 20 around the world by now. The Samui one didn’t have much memorabilia though so I hope the Bangkok branch is better, which I will also visit soon!

    After some more browsing around Chaweng I got on the shuttle to return to my hotel, just in time for another sunset-viewing session from my villa.    もっと詳しく

    Koh Samui Day 4

    Very quiet day today. No plans for once!

    I spent most of the day just relaxing at my villa, hanging out by the pool, and getting some sun. It’s still very warm here - at least 30 degrees - and I have still not seen a drop of rain on my trip. Even at night the temperature is comfortable and warm.

    I had dinner at Zest restaurant again which was good, and their Pina Colada is not too bad either!

    It turns out there is a wedding here today, and the reception is being held just below the Zest restaurant so I caught a glimpse of the festivities 💃    もっと詳しく

    Koh Samui Day 5

    Another fairly quiet day in paradise.

    I started the day by munching once again on the delicious breakfast buffet at Zest. I’m normally not much of a breakfast person but when there are so many yum things to choose from, it’s hard to resist. They even have a smoothie station where they make fresh smoothies and fruit juices.

    Following breakfast I spent some time by my pool - I might as well spend as much quality time as possible in this fancy villa in one of the best hotels in the world! It feels like an adventure being in a 5-star resort like this where everything is perfect. I’m quite happy I was able to save up enough Hilton points for 5 ‘free’ nights since a room is usually $1,000 per night or so.

    The hotel offers a free boat excursion to a nearby island so I did that over the afternoon. The speedboat ride was fairly short but very nice, and the island where we had about an hour to spend was also lovely. There were pigs (or some derivation!) roaming about on the beach which was cute. 🐷

    On the ride back we passed by the hotel and got some great photos from the sea side where you can really see how they built this thing into the hill. Very impressive. I even spotted my own villa!

    Before dinner I went up on the 4th level to Aura, a small outdoor lounge/bar next to Jahn which is their premier award-winning restaurant. The sunset was also stunning from up there.

    Jahn is a bit too pricey so I went back down to Azure on the 1st level for their amazing pizza. Great way to end my final evening in Koh Samui 🏝    もっと詳しく

    Desserts at the buffet

    Koh Samui Day 6 + Bangkok Day 1

    Last day in Koh Samui. Following breakfast and hanging out at my villa for a couple of hours, I made the trip back to the airport with the hotel’s car.

    Samui airport is quite unique. Most of it has an open air layout and it’s actually really nice and pleasant. They even provided free drinks (coffee, tea, juice) and snacks, such as popcorn and a delicious watermelon cake. Definitely one of the best airports I’ve visited!

    From Samui I took a short flight to Bangkok and arrived late in the afternoon. First impression of the capital city: chaotic! So many cars and motorbikes everywhere. Traffic is crazy.

    After checking into my hotel, another Conrad, I went out for a short walk and ended up at another luxury hotel where they had an impressive buffet with a lot of different selections. I don’t think I need to eat again for the rest of the week..

    Tomorrow I have the whole day for sightseeing in Bangkok before the long flight back home 🙀✈️    もっと詳しく
